Modiola is a genus in Malvaceae family (Mallow Family).
It's a monotipic genus. Than means it contain only one species.

Modiola caroliniana.

Common name: Carolina Bristlemallow, Red Flowered Mallow, Carolina Mallow

I found it in South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center, Corpus Christi, Nueces co. Texas. (see note 1)

For those who don't know. South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center, is not a typical botanical garden. Besides collections of plants and different areas specially designed for certain plants, like Rose Garden, Arid Garden, or plants collection (Orchids, Bromelias, Plumeria) they have a particularly huge area to display and preserve natural habitat. So a wild area. For nature lovers and wild flowers is a great area of interest with an easy access. Has only one disadvantage. Just a few hours to visit, is not enough.

Pictures taken on April, 10 2010 in Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas.

Leaves (see note 2)

Notes:
1.The plant is not reported in the USDA for Nueces County. See, the county distribution, in the state of Texas, on the page below.

http://plants.usda.gov/java/co...

This does not mean it can not be.
Unfortunately, I did not know about that and I did not pay attention to find more plants. Perhaps, it is not abundant in the area. Or maybe I did not saw them, my attention being attracted to other plants.
My impression, for distribution on the map, is that the plant can be found everywhere along the coast of Texas. But perhaps it is not abundant everywhere.

2. Leaves are variable in shape: reniform (shaped like kidney), round, or triangular. Lobate to palmately lobed.
Compare with this

uploaded by Horntoad in The All Things Plants Database

3. Some authors consider it to be native to southern U.S.

http://www.wildflower.org/plan...

others consider it "probably" native to South America

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M...

4. Links

An link from Australia

Interestingly, they mention "not noxious." But the others say it is noxious.

Here is another distribution map that shows it in a few more counties but still not Nueces County. Judging by this map I would bet that it is in most counties in the eastern half of Texas.

Here are some more of my pictures of Modiola caroliniana.

The two center pictures on the bottom row are a wild plant and the others are plants in my garden grown from a wild plant I collected. You can see how the leaf shape changed the following year with the move from the wild to my garden.

Jay, that is a neat site, who owns it? I really like it.

That is my site Josephine. I just opened it about 3 weeks ago, but I still have a lot of work to do. Something to keep me busy until spring and I can start photographing flowers again. I will probable adding a blog feature later to document my "nature walks" like I was doing in the Texas Forum.

Oh wow!!! that makes me so happy! I remember meeting you at the first swap that Dave hosted at College Station.
I wish we could meet more often, but I realize it is a long way, maybe someone will host a swap somewhere in the middle one of these days, and we can meet again.

And at Jacksonville the following year. It's a shame CeeJay dropped out. The Woodlands round up was an easy trip for me.

I agree Jay, does it cost much to do up and maintain a web site?
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

I doesn't cost that much. I pay about $15 dollars a year for a domain name through GoDaddy. My web host (Weebly) has several price plans. You can sign-up and build a site for free, you have to use their domain name and it has limited feature. But that is how I started mine. I signed up for free and started building my site and learning how to use the feature, then before I published my site I upgraded, to be able to use my own domain name and have access to other features. The current pricing for the plan that I am on is $59 for 6 months, $99 for a full year and $159 if you pay for 2 years. You don't need to know html, it's all drag and drop.

If you are interested in trying use this link to get your free website and you will get a $10 credit that you can use for one of the premium plans.

Thanks Jay. I will definitely follow this up. I used to have a free one yonks ago with Homestead. Then they announced that it was no longer free. I was too slack to save the site by paying. I lost a lot of stuff when they cancelled me. Memories.
