I am excited about the Spring getting here. I was busy with sick family members and didn't get any of my own crosses made but I have purchased a few from the LA.

What are you most excited about planting? Please share.

Teresa my daylily season was so late last summer half of them didn't bloom so I didn't even bother trying to set pods on the ones that did Glare . Sandy (seedsower) gave me some seeds in the spring and I started some of them and got 18 seedlings planted. I started 30 more seeds last week, 10 have germinated already. I am very excited about Sandy's crosses I think I should get some nice seedlings from them. Green Grin!

I wish I could plant a lot but am so limited on space. I plan to plant some Northwind Dancer crosses and maybe some President Ronald Reagon crosses. Haven't picked out which ones yet.

My goal is some toothy daylilies that will grow well in my area. This was my first year for trying some crosses, and I got off to a really late start in all ways -- didn't start pollinating until it was too warm (like about 100), didn't harvest the seeds until it was waaay late, and didn't start planting until December. And I don't think I have very good germination from my own crosses -- I need to try things differently this year. But here are the best of my crosses and number of seedlings as of about ten days ago when I last counted:

Bass Gibson X Spacecoast Irish Illumination - 5 seedlings so far
Stippled Starship X Alien Force - 3
Way Cool X Alien Force - 2
Spacecoast Starburst X Bass Gibson - 6
Bass Gibson X Rose Heat - 13
And there are a few others with either 1 seedling or none at all.

Then I decided I should maybe try purchasing some seeds through the Lily Auction:

Full Of Treasure X Dental Academy - 5 seedlings
Paula Nettles X Worthy Of Distinction - 5
Sun Bear X Vampire Bat - 2
Lemon Raspberry Delight X Forever Knight - 4
Relevant Graffito X Wickedly Wild And Wonderful - 6
Peppermint Pinwheel X Dragon Fang - 6
Fabulous Black Pearl X Casper's Revenge - 7
Much better germination, which tells me I must be doing something wrong with my own crosses. So I have some work to do...

But still, I'm pretty satisfied for the first year -- now then, where do I put them when it's time to pot them individually? I can see where this is going... YIKES!

I went a bit overboard this past season. Have nearly 2100 seedlings inside now,
which seems overwhelming when I think of planting them. Now, when I look at
photos from last season and think "how would those two work together", I give
myself a little smack on the cheek, and tell myself, no, no, don't go there. That
I must stick to the plan. The plan is to have no more than 200 at most.
The beds are ready for these, except for adding amendments. This past
season was the best I have had in five years due to end of drought conditions.
At least here, rain water is definitely better for the plants than me watering them.

Most were newer crosses with my own seedlings.

For the crosses with seedlings, some that I used:
Prissy Girl
Gary Colby
Written on the Wind
Wonder of it All
Bella Sera
Linda Beck
Calamity Jane
Dan's Paradise Pink
Tropical Hot Flash
Moment in the Sun
Duke Ellington
Mort Morss
J.T. Davis
Spectral Elegance
Memphis
Ocean Child

Using both parents from registered crosses, here are some:
SC Cranberry Kid x Gary Colby
Darla x Gary Colby
Linda Beck x Gary Colby
Linda Beck x Bella Sera
Lori Goldston x Wonder of it all
Mort Morss x Bella Sera
Ocean Child x Linda Beck
Ocean Child x Bella Sera
Sabine Baur x Written on the Wind
Wonder of it All x Linda Beck--total of 44 plants out of 46 seeds (they liked each other)
Wonder of it all x Gary Colby
Lady Betty Fretz x Written on the Wind
Royal Renaissance x Linda Beck
Royal Renaissance x Gary Colby
SC Cranberry Kid x Tropical Hot Flash
Tropical Hot Flash x Wonder of it all
Tropical Hot Flash x Moment in the Sun

Was excited about these until I made out the cross list for this coming season
with newer cultivars I have ordered this year. Now, can't wait to see what can be
crossed with these, weather and plants permitting, and their resulting babies. Will
be lucky to see any of these bloom before 2013 though. Only three times have
had babes bloom in fall of same year planted in spring initially.

Really like Bluegrass Music, new this spring, and want to cross this smaller cultivar with some
that have a high percentage of larger background blooms to hopefully maintain
at least 5.75-6 inches. Of course, this could just be dreaming. Have to wait and see.

I am planning on 45 seedlings this year - that is how many I can fit in one of my raised beds (4 x 8 ft).

What I have in the fridge in moist baggies right now is:
(from the LA):
Blazing Lampsticks X Papa Smurf
Ashtons Giggles X Winter Rainbow
Malaysian Marketplace X Bear Claws
Pink Lemonade Party X Picture In Picture
Purple Cheetah X Dragon Fang
Get Jiggy X Winter Rainbow
Heartbeat Of Heaven X Winter Rainbow

From Bee pod I collected last season:
Primal Scream X Unk
Buttered Popcorn X Unk
Firestorm X Unk
Flame of Freedom X Unk

And I will "fill in" with some seeds from the heirloom dips from the cottage. ~Jan

Jan - Buttered Popcorn x newer yellows have given me some very nice seedlings! I really like BP - don't have it anymore though. That is one I need to get again.

I put about 200 seeds in the ground back in November. Will see what comes up in the spring! I know almost everyone seems to start seeds inside - but I just put them in the ground.

Almost all of my crosses involve the 25 or so seedlings I have kept for several years. I have not grown any seedlings for 10 years - so I had not crossed them together before. I did make a few crosses involving named cultivars. Let me see if I can find photos for them.

Maybe a few will bloom in 2014. Majority will bloom in 2015.

Pod parent listed first, pollen listed second.

Zazu Pitts x Fad Gadget -- this is the most exciting of the named cultivar crosses to me. Zazu rarely sets pods. I had two pods that contained a total of 11 seed. Guess this will not be a "long cross" Green Grin!

Oh pretty. Those crosses ought to have some pretty babies.

In my raised seedling garden last year, I planted half seedlings, and half direct seeded them (it was my experimental year) My seedlings did very well, but I lost probably 50% of my direct seeds. Of course, the torrential downpours we had within a few days of me planting the seeds outside may have contributed to the lack of germination....... But the numbers didn't lie- so I have started seedlings inside this year.

Last year was my first year for Buttered Popcorn. I fell in love with it. If it grows well & survived the winter, I can send some to you - since I was supposed to transplant it last summer. Remind me later in the spring. ~Jan

I believe the key to sowing the seed in the ground is not to refrigerate them. I shell the seeds out of the pods, then let them dry over night. Then, I put the fresh seed in little paper coin envelopes, with the flap open so they get air. I store them that way till time to plant in very late fall or early winter.

Once I refrigerated them - and none came up. Total loss.

The seed will shrivel and dry like a raisin.

I count the seed before planting, and put the number on the tag that marks the cross.

I usually have 85-90% germination direct sowing outdoors.

That is good information, Juli -- Might try that with my own crosses this year, since my germination on most of my crosses was pretty small after I refrigerated them for two months. But at least I have some seedlings to play with!

I just love that first seedling! The color is nice, and would you say that is a pleated daylily? It's sooooo pretty!

Betty - that is not a seedling - well, I guess technically, it was for McNeil Carter at one time. That is Zazu Pitts. I don't know anyone else who grows it.

Yes, Zazu and Fad Gadget would be "Pleated Sculpts"

Sculpts are my favorite type of daylily. Green Grin! Thumbs up

Halloween Hocus Pocus x ??
Triple Cherries x Worth It All
Had a dozen more tiny little things, but managed to let them die during the summer.

Started from seed:
(Starmans Quest x Lady Neva) x Margo Reed Indeed - about 16 of these germinated. Going to be great fun seeing.
Laura Harwood x Margo Reed Indeed - had four of these of the germinated quantity that made it through summer.

Seedling x Margo Reed Indeed - three here.

My first seedling were dogs Sad I started making a few crosses with Strawberry Candy and they were all muddy. I started collecting about 7 yrs ago. I was experimenting. I composted them or gave them away. I quickly decided if I was going to take the time to make crosses I needed some good plants to work with lol.

Now I am into UFs I think the are just so pretty! Love the movement in a breeze. Polys are interesting to me also. I have several seedling that should bloom for the first time this yr. Hoping the crop looks better lol.

Last summer I was so caught up at the hospitals with different family members I didn't even set a pod. Hoping this yr is better.

I did buy some crosses on the LA to play with. To me this is a good way to get a nice plant without the expense of owning the pricey ones.

Here is what I have to plant:
Hows the Weather Up There x Heavenlly Pink Butterfly
Scrambled Legs x Lily Munster
" x Nathan Sommers
" x Dancing Summerbird
Windmaster x Absolute Ripper
Mandrin Sea x Electric Red
Electric Red x Serene Thoughts

TRAHLYTA X PICKET FENCES
RENAISSANCE MAIDEN X DECOLORES - 7) Nude Yoga x Indolent Curiosity
BIG SMILE X PICKET FENCES -
Time in a Bottle X Web of Intrigue 5 Seed
Gary Colby X Princess Diana 6 Seeds

Debra, I have gotten seedlings a couple of times on the LA. There can be a huge difference. One was a 4 fan mature seedling clump LOVE IT and the other was a tiny, hope you make it cross. It did but it also took 2 yrs to bloom :(
