Take Old Towels to the Shed

By gingin

Worn out or threadbare towels can be useful a little longer by hanging them in the potting shed. When you're done working and rinse off the first layer of dirt before going inside you'll have something to dry your hands on besides your shirt. When they get really nasty then pitch them.

Mine go to the dogs at that point, but I could definitely share them with the garden Thumbs up

I posted a comment before Mary did, but it's not here. Confused

How did you post a comment Mary without having >a new thread< come up when you made your comment? It did for me and I didn't put anything in the space.

I just found it and I'll re-post it here. It was in the "untitled" section. *Blush*

Super idea! I tip my hat to you.

Not too long ago, I pitched a bunch of old and thin handtowels. Crying Blinking Didn't think they could have been used for anything else. Thumbs up

I grew up poor, so I can't imagine throwing old worn towels away. I don't have a potting shed, but I use them for various purposes. And wash them until they're so bad I have no use for them!

They also work as wicks or "capillary matting" when you set small pots or 6-pack cells in a tray. That mat wicks water out of over-watered cells, and provides water to drying-out cells.

Like bottom-watering for clumsy people who don't want mud in the carpet.

I splurged on some cotton flannel, but old toweling would be a heavier, faster wick. I might try one as a way to wick water out of the bottom of a shallow, heavy clay raised bed, but like Linda, I keep using them until all the loops wear off the terrycloth and I can see through the fabric.

I might be part chicken: cheap-cheap! cheap-cheap!

Even after they're so worn they're almost gone, the animals at the shelter would love to snuggle in them.

I keep a couple of old ones in the sunroom to wipe up spills after watering plants. I also keep an old one by the door to the back deck to stash my dirty shoes.

I've been turning holey socks, holey pants, etc into rags. I've now hidden the paper towels to force others to use these. If it is something greasy, we just throw it away, otherwise we wash them.

Greasy rags could have one more use before going to landfill: add a little motor oil, then wipe down shovels, rakes and hoes.
