Continuing from here
The thread "Time to think about wintersowing" in Winter Sowing forum

This sudden cold snap in the weather motivated me to sow a few more jugs of wintersown seeds yesterday. I did one jug each of
gaillardia Goblin
sempervivum
helenium autumnale
agastache purple pygmy
lobelia cardinalis

In January I had done only 4 jugs
corydalis lutea
Joe Pye
penstemon smallii
rudbeckia hirta

The gaillardia, corydalis, and semps were new commercial seeds. All the rest were old seeds which I either harvested from my yard or got in trade. Some were very old (the penstemon was from 2007 but still smelled like dirty feet, the agastache 2008...). So my wintersowing this year really is a leap of faith in terms of weird weather and old seeds. I might not have any germinate this year at all, but they weren't serving any purpose in my seed box. Time will tell.

That corydalis lutea is especially nice-looking, Karen. It sounds like it's a very useful and tough little plant as well. Thumbs up

So far, in WS containers, I've done these -

Veronica gentianoides
Alaria petiolata
Papaver paeoniflorum "Candy Floss"
Veronica austriaca teucrium
Anemone baldensis
Papaver paeoniflorum "Black Peony"
Anemone patens wolfgangiana
Geranium phaeum samobor
Hydrophyllum virginianum - Virginia Waterleaf
Gentiana crinita - Fringed Gentian
Camassia scilloides - Wild Hyacinth

Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra - Yellow Ox-eye
Geranium Jester's Jacket
Hypericum androsaemum - Albury Purple
Primula Japonica
Penstemon barbatus - Cambridge Mix
Illinois Bundleflower

I've held back half of the anemone seeds to try indoors, since so far, that's the only way I've had any luck with them germinating. I'll keep trying the WS method however, since so many sources say that this will work for those seeds.

The Geranium phaeum samobor seeds were so cool-looking that it was almost difficult to plant them! Hilarious! Hopefully, I'll get a plant out of it though, and then I'll be able to collect more of these interesting looking seeds. Smiling

Chelle the Geranium Jester's Jacket is very interesting. Hope it germinates for you so we can see them growing in our garden.

Another wow on the Sambor seeds. Lovey dubby

I had very good germination of geranium seeds last year, so let's hope this year is as good! Smiling

Some of last year's starts didn't bloom last season; so I'm already anticipating seeing those first blooms this year. It's pretty cool to have so many different ones going.....always something to look forward to. Big Grin

Nice seed list, Chelle, and those are odd looking seeds!

Susan, some of your sprouts might surprise you and survive. I've had perennials survive some pretty bad freezes as long as they were still in their jug. Wintersown seedlings are pretty tough. Survival probably depends on how cold for how long a time, but you might want to wait before dumping them. Then too, there might be some seeds in the jug they haven't sprouted yet and they might still germinate. The tithonia is only half-hardy I think so they might be toast, but maybe there are still some unsprouted seeds yet to show.

Ok, good information thanks! I did save some seeds just in case they toast. I will not toss anything yet. Thumbs up

I really wish someone would come and plant my jugs for me....I just can't seem to get it done this year. Please, anyone......pretty please? Lovey dubby

Everyone has some nice seed lists. Chelle---have you grown the Illinois Bundleflower before? That one has caught my eye for a while.

Everytime I read what everyone is planting and I see something new, I think I must have it. You all are just feeding my seed addiction......

Nope, but they appear to be very easy! I soaked seed in really hot water overnight, then half was winter sown, and half I left in a baggie on top of the water heater. The indoors seed has germinated already....in like 3 days. Hurray!

I have some extras if you want some; just send me a mail. Smiling

Limited time for playing with seeds today, but it was nice and sunny, so I did these 4 wildflowers today, and moved the heat-treated Iris Missouriensis outdoors.

Camassia leichtlinii - Greater Camas
Gentiana Quinquefolia - Stiff Gentian
Guara coccinea - Scarlet Guara
Geum Triflorum - Prairie Smoke

Well, we went down to 20 - 25 degrees in the last few days, but my seedlings are looking great! Thumbs up And the candytuft is finally sprouting! Hurray!

I love that I don't have to do anything but just go out there occasionally and admire them. Smiling

And the crocuses are still blooming like crazy! They weren't affected by the chill at all.

I have soooo much more sowing to do... and the worst part about it is washing the jugs!

Sounds like a good plan ssgardener, we have been down in the low 20's as well and I think my sprouts all froze, but will have to wait and see what happens, I planted extra just in case, either way there will be plenty of perennials. Green Grin!
Glad to hear about your crocuses and I need to check on my daffs. Thumbs up

I decided that I'm going to clean the tub first and put all the bottles in there with hot water and a little bit of bleach. I let too many bottles pile up and now I'm just frustrated with this pile of plastic. I have no one to blame but myself!

Susan, what happens if the sprouts freeze? I wonder if mine are frozen too and I just can't tell? Hilarious!

Karen said don't worry about it because you will get surprised sometimes. If it is something you really, really wanted then maybe you could plant a few more just in case. Otherwise just wait and see. I planted a lot of different seeds so if a few don't make it then it's ok. My biggest sprouts were the Giant Red Cactus Zinnia, really looking forward to these and I planted both packages! My bad, I should have held back on one in case the others didn't make it. I just didn't know we would have such a late winter and stuff started sprouting. Sad It's a learning process and thankfully seeds are cheep, you can't afford not to try, right? I think next year I will wait till first of Feb instead of Jan. this just depends on your zone, you will learn as you go along. Even if you do kill a few along the way at least you learned something. I bet you will have a good game plan for those jugs by next year! Hilarious! Thumbs up

Best survival chance for a hard frost/freeze will be with perennials. Zinnias probably not on any that have sprouted.

Well, I can just use the mixed zinnias, or Red Spider. Maybe I will try again next year, I really need to get organized with these seeds. Whistling

Best bet for success on tender or half hardy annuals is to sow in very late winter.. I've done them as early as early spring. Less chance of them getting zapped by frost. I'm not certain how/when that might apply to more southern zones but for me not before around mid-March.

Or, adopt Plan B- when frost/freeze threaten give sprouts protection, like throw a blanket over them. I usually do that.

Well they are under the porch with a dome over them. But they still froze, I think. I will wait and see. I have other stuff I can plant but I really don't need any more plants right now. If they all come up I will be overwhelmed. Sad
