Hello, my real name is Chris and I live in Glendale, AZ (zone 9b). I listen to The Survival Podcast on which Dave has been a guest. The host of the podcast talks frequently about permaculture and integrating its philosophy into a self-sufficiency lifestyle. Now, I'm far from an expert in permaculture, but I am enthusiastic about the subject. I have been handed the torch to mod the new Permaculture forum here on ATP, an honor I humbly accept. Thanks Dave! Now let's build this community!

Ah, I've been waiting for this one. Of course, this is the time of year I'm off clearing ground, starting plants, and working on greenhouses instead of the computer, but I'll be around, eventually.

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

Thanks Susie...This is a big undertaking, and will require input from as many people as possible. I've just scratched the surface of what permaculture is all about and it practically demands a complete rethinking of gardening because it involves so many systems working together as a complete organism, for lack of a better term.

Chris, since I don't know what I'm talking about but I've read some articles here at ATP.... would it be appropriate to post link/copies of dave's articles on "Worm casings" and 'Huggle kuchen" Blinking or whatever that pile of straw and stuff type of garden is ? Shrug! Maybe even a link to the podcast he recently participated in.

I kind of get into the organizational, like-to-see-relative-topics-in-one-place syndrome... but, if you saw my own own workspace you'd scream and run! Hilarious!

I'm with Susie ... I think a *sticky* at the top of this forum with pertinent information (eg something explaining Permaculture Gardening, Dave's article's, a link to the podcast etc.) would be a great help!

Hugelkultur. "hoogle culture", in brief, involves burying organic materials (usually wood in the form of whole branches) under planting beds to simulate a natural planting environment by holding moisture down where the roots expect it to be.

I'm headed to the gym. I'll post some more links to videos and articles about some of the key aspects of permaculture when I get back later.

I first became interested in permaculture many years ago. Bought Bill Mollison's book and studied it closely. I must dig out that book again, haven't look at it in years.

What I liked about the system was it's fexibility and adaptability. Generally it runs 'hand in glove' with organics, biodynamics. and alternate living. However, you don't have to go "all the way". It's easy to adopt and adapt aspects of the system to suit your lifestyle and circumstances. The general principles are what's important. It's all about intergration of yourself with nature. And getting nature to work for you.

I don't know if you want Chris to post the link to the Survival Podcast, like Alice going down the rabbit hole, it's a life changer. I also listen to the podcast daily.

Thanks Dave and Chris for this. I'm hoping to learn more about permaculture as well.

Me too, don't forget me! And I will be moving back to the Phoenix (Deer Valley?) area in mid to late April, so it's nice to know there's neighbors with the same thoughts.
In the end, only kindness matters.

Science is not the answer, it is the question.
