Awesome pictures, Betty, as usual. There is Stop Flirting again that I just have to have. I have contacted Napa Iris to see if they can add it to my order I placed.

That's great -- I usually add to my order each year as things bloom, and as long as they're not sold out there's been no problem.

They're looking great there Betty, I've only got a few SDB's and dwarfs blooming, but I have bloom stalks starting on Shakdown and Mexican Holiday, so It won't be long. They're both in a kind of micro climate. Night time temps in the low 30's don't help much, but I hope it doesn't ruin them. Tom

Beautiful photos, Betty! I'm sure you're enjoying each and every one of them. Our TB's should be blooming here in the Mid-Atlantic area in about three weeks or so and it's like the longest wait ever, but always worth it.

And of course it's starting to get windy again! I've staked quite a few stalks by now, but maybe I'd better get myself out there and check things out. I had APPLAUSE LINE, GRACIOUS CURVES, BARBARA MY LOVE and ADOREE opening today and don't want to lose them...

Betty you have beautiful pics there I really like Backdraft the color just glows and I ordered Picture Book last year after looking at your photos of it that is a really beautiful flower, I hope you have many more coming along, We are struggling here are Lows dropped down to 28 last night and we had a hard freeze very disapointing most of the Japanese Maples got burnt bad I dont know if they will recover from it or not I also had alot of bloom stalks in Iris that were getting close so I don't know what will happen with them there is part of the leaves that have a funny discoloration where they got burned so I guess its a waiting game to see what happens.

Thank you! We had a bit of wind and rain yesterday and are expecting more for the next two or three days, and I'm using every stake I have to try to keep my lovelies from collapsing under the weight of wet blooms plus wind. But so far everything looks OK this morning. I'm so sorry about your hard freeze, Aruba, and I totally understand about the Japanese maples! I have almost 20 different ones that I've collected over the past few years, and I can only imagine what you're going through. Were they just starting to bud, or did you have any leaves coming out? But Japanese maples can take freezing weather, can't they? I'll hope for the best for you!

But the iris stalks -- Oh noooooo! I hope they aren't too far gone and will recover -- can't wait to see the pictures! I got BACKDRAFT from the hybridizer, Hugh Stout, and I know that Rockytop also carries it. The colors are different from just about everything else I have, so it's a keeper for me at this point.

And Paul, I can't wait to see your flower show! It must be getting close now, eh? I know you've posted pictures of a few of your seedlings now -- yea!!!

I just got my Sutton's catalog yesterday and wasn't planning to order from them -- but I see two rebloomers I think I'll just have to squeeze in, plus I want another rhizome of DOUBLE DOWN for sure. And they also have MIDNIGHT COWBOY -- can't get enough of that one, and mine didn't get enough water last summer and succumbed -- so I need more! Does anyone have BOTTLE ROCKET? I sure like the looks of that one!

Betty I think it was a complete loss for the Trees I think I lost the majority of them I dont know if they can recover or not I have heard they are really touchy when they first leaf out and all of mine had broken buds and had just leafed out within the past 10 days so I dont know I am trying to find more info on them but struggling, it completly froze all of the buds off the Azaelas, the Iris all look like they have leaf spot around the ends now but its not, because they were in perfect condition a couple days ago so I guess we will see what happens its weird because I went out to spray them with water thinking with as cold as it was we would have frost but there was none I was always told they could take the cold just not the frost if you wash it off with water before the sun hits it your fine but that was not the case here I even covered some of the trees and Roses it made know difference they froze, heres the pics of the damage some of the bloom stalks that were ready to open I think are gone Im hoping the rest make it but we have had freezing temps into May here so still along ways to go.

You can clip back damage on the irises. If stalks were ok they will probably bloom, but you may find some damaged flowers.

Lucy the majority of the iris stalks had not opened but they were far enough along I think it damaged the blooms we are due for 70's the next 5 days so I guess only time will tell, I loved the warmer weather all winter but I have been worried because all it takes is a couple nights of cold to due a lot of damage.

Aruba, there is a product called Cloud Cover that we spray our Japanese maples with each May to keep them from burning over the summer months. My sister learned the hard way the first year she planted them here that it was a treatment we just cannot overlook here with our 100+ summer temps. But when we learned about it at a local nursery, they also said it protects Japanese Maples, Jacarandas, etc., during the winter months to keep frosts from killing them. Hopefully your trees will come out of it eventually, and I would recommend you try that before the first frost next winter to see if it helps. It sure has helped here. It puts a coating on the leaves and branches, and my sister and I will never go without it again.

Also, would frost blankets/covers help? I got one at Lowe's a few years back to protect our bonsais, and it worked really well. And I think they come in different sizes.

Thanks Betty I will check into it if they pull through I have not had the best of luck with them I have 5 or 6 close to the house that were fine but the ones in the berms and out by them selves were burnt badly I did cover about 10 of the smaller ones but it made know difference It wasnt the frost it was the low temps it hit the 20's for a few hours 2 days in a row the ones I covered look the same as the others. We are just at the mercy of Mother Nature Im going to give them a month and see what happens hopefully they will come back.

The SDB season is about over here and, I have to say, it was a bit disappointing. I think it was so hot at the end of March when the buds were developing that their colors ended up being somewhat muted.

The IB season is starting up, though, and their colors look pretty good. It's been much more seasonable for the last week.

Magnificent Masterpiece - it would be so easy to dismiss this as just another dark purple iris. It's not, it's spectacular. Pictures just don't do it justice and it has made a massive clump in just its second year. Every stalk to the right of the open flower is part of the clump. There are at least 20 stalks in there. We had 20+ mph winds all day today with gusts up to 40 mph and flower is almost pristine.
Thumb of 2012-04-14/KentPfeiffer/4a080b Thumb of 2012-04-14/KentPfeiffer/3b2cae

Twist Of Fate - I always liked the color of this one, but it shows one of the main weaknesses of most historic varieties: it doesn't have the substance to stand up to adverse weather. The wind today noticeably tore it up.

Well, I am late to the party but I just love all these beautiful stunning blooms. Really taken by that RUSTLER as it looks like a very unusual color. Betty, your garden must look simply amazing at this time of year. How about some pictures of the gardenbeds with all the iris blooming? Please, please! Big Grin

I can take a picture or two, but it won't look full of blooms, just scattered iris blooms. And there's hardly anything blooming in my big iris bed in the back yard -- it runs a bit later than the front, even though I fertilize it earlier. Must be a microclimate thing.
