I found several as they heaved out of the soil over this past winter, but a few got away from me.
Can anyone tell me the name of this plant?

Well, I managed to solve my own question....
I had bought a lot of different groundcovers from several different nurseries for my NO MOW front yard project. Eventually I remembered that although from all over the place, a lot of them were "Stepables". SO..... I looked up stepables and there the two in question both were!

This one is Aceana Purpurea Purple New Zealand Bur

Begging to differ, it's definitely not Acaena inermis 'Purpurea' (or any Acaena)...
Hmmm, looks very familiar though...

You're probably right.
I do have some ajuga.
The sample I asked about didn't flower to clue me in.
I thought it was a different plant entirely!
