Introduction to Bee and Butterfly Co-op:
A bee and butterfly garden is a simple way to view more wildlife and help these most entertaining characters in our lives. You can make a significant contribution by adding just a few plants. Many natural Bee and Butterfly habitats have been lost by our human interventions of construction and removal of natural lands. It is easy to counter this by creating small habitats in your own space. There are 80 species of bees and thousands of butterflies and moths so it is simple to create an impact by including nectar plants that bloom and plants that caterpillars love to eat!
We have attempted to identify a variety of plants beloved by Bees and Butterflies...most are easy-to-grow, some are difficult to find, and all of them are cited as positive by the National Bee Association of the US and the National American Butterfly Association.

BLACK AND BLUE SAGE (Salvia guarantica 'Black and Blue')
This Brazilian native, often called Blue Anise Sage, has highly aromatic leaves and fragrant dark blue blooms, which are evident on the plant from early spring through fall. The plant varies in vigor with the amount of sun and moisture that it receives. It most often reaches 30", but can reach 5' tall in areas of longer growing seasons. In its native natural habitat, the Black and Blue is a tree. In most portions of the US, it is a deciduous perennial that can exhibit similar characteristics to mint. It is best positioned in a natural or wild area and intermixed with wildflowers such as poppies and larkspur...but bring a lawn chair up to enjoy the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds!

BLUE PORTERWEED (Stachytarpheta cayennensis)
Blue Porterweed is considered an Herb or Tender Perennial in the garden. It is winter-hardy to about 20 deg and can behave as a deciduous perennial in USDA zones 8 through 11. Blooming begins at a small size with bright, brilliant blue blossoms that are highly attractive to the bees as well as butterflies. Blooming continues throughout the season and the plant presents a beautiful fall display with yellow, red, and bright orange coloration. This plant can reach on an average 5 to 6' in height. It is considered drought-tolerant and can be an exceptional addition to the Xeric Garden. Note: Blue Porterweed is listed as Invasive in Florida.

CONFEDERATE ROSE, COTTON ROSE, 'DOUBLE PINK SOUTERN BELLE' (Hibiscus mutabilis)
The Confederate Rose is not a Rose. This tall (often 6-8') shrub is diciduous during the winter and appears in late spring. The glory of the plant appears during late summer and through the fall...The blooms are often 8" in size, double-ruffled pink, and lightly scented. The blooms are highly attractive to bees and butterflies and make an excellent cutting flower for a bouquet. Place the shrub in full sun and provide moderate moisture. Over-watering makes the plant susceptible to insect damage. Confederate Rose is winter hardy in USDA zones 7a through 11, but must be used as a container plant in the more northern regions.

'CORKY STEM' PASSIONFLOWER (Passiflora suberosa)
The Corky Stem carries a long list of alias names such as Indigo Berry, Devil's Bloom and others. This is a unique member of the passionflora family and is distinguished by a rough-textured stem, lime-green blooms, and a longer blooming period that other passionflowers. This is a passionflower vine that grows only 6 to 8' and blooms well in sun, partial shade or full shade. Corky Stem is winter hardy and evergreen in USDA zones 8 through 11. In zones 7, it will often lose leaves during the weather in the 30s, but recovers with vigor when warm weather arrives again. It benefits from moderate water, but is considered drought-tolerant when not placed in full sun. Note: This native species does not sucker as many other passionflowers do.

DAPPLED WILLOW (Salix integra 'Hokuro Nishiki')
The tri-variegated foliage of pink, white and green is reason enough to add it to the landscape! The blooms are too small for humans to truly appreciate, but are highly sought by bees and butterflies. Blooming begins at an early age for the plant and the small, whitish blooms begin in late winter through mid spring. The shrub is field-tested winter hardy from USDA zones 5 through 9b. In the southern zones, Dappled Willow should be considered an understory and protected from direct sun, which intensifies the variegation. Excellent drought-tolerant plant for a shady understory site. Size of the plant seems to vary greatly. Most references list the shrub as 5' tall and 5' wide; however, there are reports of the shrub growing double that size. Note: The 'mother plant' for the plants offered on this Co-op is 12 years old and is 6' tall and approximately 4' wide.

PURPLE FIRESPIKE (Odontonema callistachyum)
This Firespike is misnamed because the blooms are actually a bright magenta, not purple. It blooms well in full shade but can be planted in partial shade to full sun. It can grow 3 to 4' in a single season. It is a deciduous shrub in its hardy range with large, smooth, waxy green leaves and lovely magenta spikes that reach above the leaves. The leaves provide a beautiful red and yellow display in the fall. You can add hummingbirds to the assortment of wildlife that habit this plant. In USDA Zones 8 through 11, it is considered a perpetual bloomer and an easy care-free and drought-tolerant addition to the garden.

RED FIRESPIKE (Odontonema strictum)
This Firespike has bright red blooms throughout the year in USDA Zones 8a through 11. It is considered very hardy and drought-tolerant despite its classification as semi-tropical. It most often is 3 to 4' tall and 2 to 3' wide when mature. The Red Firespike is considered maintenance free and slightly hardier than its cousin the Purple Firespike.

'HOT TRUMPETS' SAGE (Salvia roemeriana 'Hot Trumpets')
Often called Roemer's Sage, this is a new, effective hybrid of the native Cedar Sage. Unlike its native cousin, Hot Trumpets blooms at a taller height (12" or more), blooms throughout the season beginning in mid-spring throughout the fall, and the flowers are highly fragrant....to humans as well as the bees and butterflies! If Hot Trumpets is placed in partial shade or full shade, the bloom is stunning and the plant can behave as a short-lived perennial where it often reseeds. The bloom is taller and brighter red in full sun. Hot Trumpets is an evergreen perennial in USDA zones 8a-11.

KANGAROO PAW (Anigozanthos rubus) 'Red'
This Kangaroo Paw bloom is a brilliant red color that begins a display in late spring and continues throughout mid-summer, with often a re-bloom in a warm fall. The blooms form in clusters on tall reed-like spikes above smooth, iris-like leaves that are 3 to 4' tall. The plant is often evergreen and is classified as a semi-tropical perennial in USDA zones 8 through 11. This is a native Australian species that is most often called a 'Tall Paw'. It has proved to be much hardier than the shorter hybrids that are more commonly available today.

KANGAROO PAW (Anigozanthos) 'Yellow'
This Kangaroo Paw bloom is a bright golden yellow color that begins a display in late spring and continues throughout mid-summer, with often a re-bloom in a warm fall. SCARLET MILKWEED (Asclepias curassavica)
This native of Mexico and Texas goes by many names...Butterfly Weed, Mexican Milkweed, Swallowwort, and Bloodflower among others. The plant dates back to the Incan records where the milky sap is noted as a salve. Today, it is most often grown to attract and feed more than 40 species of butterflies! It is considered a deciduous sub-shrub that most often reaches 18 to 24" tall with opposite, linear green leaves. Once it begins to bloom, it provides a continuous display from spring through the fall. It is considered a full sun plant and drought-tolerant once established. It is a perennial in USDA Zones 8a through 11.

TALL VERBENA (Verbena bonariensis)
This Brazilian native carries many names such as Purpletop Vervain and Upright Verbena. The leaves are a grayish-green and fuzzy-textured. The blooms present on tall (3 to 4') stems above the leaves with varying colors from light to dark purple. The bloom is perpetual from mid-summer through to fall. This is a perennial plant is USDA Zones 7a to 10b, is considered drought-tolerant. It is an asset to an full sun Xeric Garden. However, this plant also blooms in full and partial shade and the stems are excellent for including in a bouquet.
Note: The Tall Verbena is considered invasive in milder climates where it is allowed to re-seed, but when kept trimmed, the plant reproduces normally through underground roots much as mints do.

VARIEGATED LANTANA 'SAMANTHA' (Lantana 'Samantha')
'Samantha' is also called Lemon Swirl because of the dramatically variegated foliage which is chartreuse, yellow and white on each leaf. Bright yellow blooms begin when the plant is quite young and continue throughout the season, providing perpetual nectar for multiple species of butterflies. Samantha is a hardy deciduous perennial in USDA zones 8 through 11 that thrives in full sun. For those in more northern zones, this lantana makes an excellent specimen in a hanging basket since it seldom reaches more than 12 to 18" in height.

'WENDY'S WISH' SAGE (Salvia 'Wendy's Wish')
Wendy's Wish is a newly released hybrid from Wendy Smith (AU) who lists the heritage as Salvia mexicana 'Lolly'. It is distinctive from his heritage with aromatic leaves and bright pink, magenta tubular blooms. The evergreen shrub begins blooming in spring and early summer, then re-blooms throughout the fall. The shrub at maturity is 3 to 4' tall and as wide with soft green, aromatic leaves and dark burgundy stems. Wendy's Wish can take full sun as well as bloom and perform well in partial shade. The shrub is drought-tolerant once established and has been found winter hardy to 25 degrees.

WHITE VEINED DUTCHMAN'S PIPE (Aristolochia fimbriata)
This beautifully veined sprawling vine is often listed incorrectly as a climber. This variety of Dutchman's Pipe is a groundcover that provides an almost unique form of variegation in the partially shady portion of the garden. Singular plants seldom reach more than 12" long in one season. Allow it to meander up other small plants to enhance the foliage display. Spring and Summer blooms are the same characteristically Aristolochia green pipe of about 1" size. The pipe develops into a dark purple seed pod as the bloom finishes. Both appear on the vine at the same time providing additional interest in the garden. White Veined Dutchman's Pipe is a winter hardy deciduous vine that is hardy in USDA zones 7a through 9b. Once established, this vine is drought-tolerant and an interesting addition to a Shady Xeric Garden.

WILD WHITE PETUNIA (Ruellia malacosperma 'alba')
This ruellia is one of the most versatile of all plants. It can grow in a pond as an aquatic, reside and thrive in a meadow garden and yet be quite at home in dry shade. It can be sited in full sun and yet blooms well in partial to full shade. It is a hardy perennial in USDA zones 7 through 11. It is an evergreen in the more southern portions of its growing zones. Multiple white, trumpet-shaped blooms appear on 24 to 36" stems throughout the season. This often begins early in April and continues throughout the first frost.
Note: The plant propagates itself through underground running roots and may be planted in a large landscaper's pot to stem aggressiveness.
