Here's my lovely favorite (one of) rose blooming through a nearby ligustrum:

And here's the bloom. If I could only upload the fragrance, which is outstanding!

Sue, don't you just love him? Every time he blooms, I tell him how wonderful he is and how good he smells and how much I love him. He is fantastic!

Tradescant looks loverly. Sticking tongue out

I'll have to add Tradescant to my collection of purplish DA roses. I have Falstaff, The Prince, Wm Shakespeare 2000, and Young Lycidas planted in my garden. Only Falstaff is well established in the garden. I'm afraid that the deer come from miles around to eat its leaves and flowers, so it is frequently on the brink of failure. I have high hopes for it this year; but its roses are not nearly so dark nor so large as Tradescant's.

Toni, someone needs to spray their computer screen with something fragrant.

You need the Dark Lady, Sophy's Rose, Darcey Bussell, L.D. Braithwaite, Munstead Wood. Sophy's a kind of dark purplish pink, a neon sort of color, but the rest are "loverly"! The deer leave mine alone, but maybe it's because they have to eat their way through the daylilies to get to the roses, and the daylilies don't poke as bad! Glare Rolling my eyes.

Cindi, Darcy Bussell is on my list! I have all the rest except Munstead Wood. I'll post photos when they bloom. And, Steve, I'll spray the 'puter, too!

I forgot: L.D. Braithwaite also got planted this year. I guess the Dark Lady would take a place not to far from Wm. Shakespeare in the garden. I grew Sophy's rose and was impressed with its performance, but never quite liked the color. I've been tempted by the other two. Am I right that Darcey Bussell and Munstead Wood make better shrubs than some of DA's more stick-like roses? I see photos of the blossoms and think that they are maybe a little informal. If the plant were really nicely shrubby and the roses offered new fragrance ( is there really a hint of raspberry or vanilla there?) that could more than make up for it.

Angie, that sounds like a great idea. I was thinking of doing the same; but I'm not sure it will make your photo of Tradescant smell any better to Toni.

There must be regional differences in performance. My Austins are all shrubby. If anything, they get too large. All are definitely informal. Darcy Bussell is the slowest grower i've ever seen.

Thanks for the info on Darcy Bussel. I'm such a terrible rose gardener that I think I might avoid slow growers for a while. That may be a mistake. Claire Martin complains that in the American West too many of DA's rose suffer from 'Jolly Green Giant Syndrome' where the plants get huge quickly but simply do not blossom. I saw that when I planted Graham Thomas in Texas. I got an 8 ft tall plant that looked lush and gorgeous, but nary a bloom. Sound familiar?

What I mean when I say shrubby is not 'big' but 'well branched.' A complaint I have with many HTs is that they don't branch very much and you get these ugly stick-like plants in the garden. David Austin roses are not quite so stick like, but some don't branch very much. Crocus Rose, for example has very straight, unbranched canes. So too Falstaff. When I grew six Tamora I don't recall seeing a single branch; it was six sticks in the garden! By comparison many polyanthas and minis are very well branched: Rise 'n' Shine, Katharina Zeimet, Caldwell Pink, etc. Sophy's rose is pretty well branched, but the branching angle is small which creates a very vertical plant, despite branching.

I only have 2 DA roses.. Molineux & Othello. (didn't even know that Othello was a DA rose.. I had to look that one up!) I can definitely promise you that both have never been a Jolly Green Giant of a rose. More like a single spindly cane topped with a single rose at almost all times that it blooms. Othello's a little more robust (I got Molineux from RU, so I'm fighting the teeny own-root thing) but they're still both very leggy. Not as bad as my Outta the Blue. OtB is more like a miniature tree w/long long canes and leaves only at the very very top! Ridiculous!

Toni: I believe you may be pleasantly surprised by Molineux when it gets established. Thumbs up That is my other favorite rose, as I mentioend, and it blooms non-stop for me all summer long. Not very fragrant here, but supposed to have good fragrance. I love it! And it's not at all spindly. I have it against a small trellis paired with clematis Asao and together they look great! I'll post a photo when it starts blooming.

Darcy Bussell is on my want list, along with Sheila's Perfume and quite a few others.

I was just reading this blog this morning (from So. Calif.) and just over halfway down the page, she talks about Molineaux. Her description of it are the same reasons I love it.

There's oh, 35-40 Austins in my yard, and most look like these two:

Sorry about the light on these. No cloud cover today! The colors are really pretty, not washed out the way photos look midday. Mine branch out just fine. I don't spray, rarely water, feed only with compost. I'll be digging out the daylilies to give these roses more room because they have earned their space.

Thanks Sue, it's completely clear that Molineux doesn't get JGG syndrome in southern CA. It keeps on being on my list of roses to get. But it never quite seems to get ordered. I can see, too, that Bishop's Castle doesn't suffer from JGG syndrome there either. Quite a lot of the wow factor in Piece of Eden garden photography, isn't there?

Toni, once your spindly roses get established have you considered trying to peg the canes? I've heard that you can do it in stages by securing weights to the tips of the canes. I've never actually tried this, but it is a solution advocated by Martin for spindly DA roses. I was in the garden today and I noticed that Awakening - a sport of New Dawn - which is in its second year in the garden and is approaching waist height - has been growing at 45 degrees for so long that it is throwing out laterals. It's what roses do when their long canes are no longer vertical. And it can multiply the number of roses by a big number.

I think the conversation is convincing me that I want to get my DA roses on Dr Huey rootstock. Angie, is your Tradescant from DA roses or is it from somewhere else? Do you remember whether it is own-root or grafted? It looks really healthy and robust.
