I'm new to this site and am from Kingsport, TN. A plant I really love to grow is the tropical milkweed { Asclepius curavassica} It makes a huge bush of colorful blooms and butterflies love it. It's not winter hardy so I pot up a few and move indoors for the winter. Another plus is that Monarch butterflies lay eggs on it in the fall and it supports a bunch of caterpillars. Grows great from cuttings too and makes a ton of seed. For some strange reason the seed is very expensive. If anyone wants to grow it, I've got a ton of seed I've collected.

Welcome, pastelpaul. Great to see more Tennessee gardeners here! Thank you for your generous offer. I hope you have some takers.

I, too, love A. curassavica. Isn't it a wonderful plant? Technically it isn't hardy here either, but I have it come back every year in the same spot. I also make sure I scatter some of the seeds back in that area. Do you grow a lot of it?

Welcome!

I am new here as I just now signed up.I live in a little town close to Clarksville Tn. I suppose I was a little too eager this year as I have already srarted a few tomatos and have a few already over a foot tall. This is my first year of starting plants indoors so I am sure I will make plenty mistakes. My garden spot is 60 x 100 feet. I plan to set out about 20 tomatos of various kinds along with peppers, potatoes, broccoli, carrots, onions, and other things. I look foward to getting help from those that post on this forum.

Hi Lynn --
Welcome! You live close to me then. The Tennessee Forum has been quiet so it's great to see some new folks posting.

Sounds as if you have a great start on your tomatoes! I usually grow some in containers and hanging bags. I grow some other veggies as well. You have a large garden area. How nice.

This photo isn't too good but was the one I could find quickly.

I am ready for spring. On warm days, I try to get outside to do some clean up chores. My garden was really neglected last year as I had to have knee replacement surgery in mid June so could not get out much (even though they try to make it sound like you will be fine in six weeks, trust me-it takes much longer). My garden is very weedy and badly grown up. I too have started some seed indoors and plan to start more in the next month. I am mainly a flower gardener although I do start three- four tomato and cucumber plants each year.

Hello-I am in Moscow, 40 miles east of Memphis. We have 10 acres, mostly wooded. Japanese iris, daylilies, water gardening take most of my gardening budget (which was actually used up in 2004). Personally I have made many mistakes and killed more plants than some people ever have in their lives. But I am learning and my rate of "plantacide" has gone down greatly, in fact now one of my problems is keeping plants where they are suppose to be growing. Some of my biggest errors involved stating too many seeds indoors, too early and trying to grow plants in soil somewhere they were never meant to grow. Literally I have had plants just disappear from my garden, never to be seen again. I mainly grow flowers, too.

Reno-All I can say is amend, amend, amend or find something that grows well in clay as long it is not kudzu, which grows excellent in clay.. Smiling

Nice to meet you, all.

Good morning Tee, we are still dealing with the ice storm. Power still out for northern Shelby county. Ark had the most ice and still has people trapped on I -55 from Memphis to bootheel, I bet Dyersburg and your area roads are still iced. Today temp will get above 32 degrees here but how far north still will be icy on the roads.
I am so thankful I am no longer on call at the hospital, I always had to make it no matter what! Now I have family from Midtown over since power is still out and I am right in the middle of Midtown in the Parkway House with no power problems.

My iris are breaking thru the frosty crust, maybe by the end of the week I can get out to see our neighbors Lenten Roses.
