This thread is devoted to a possible upcoming hybridizing clinic that will be given by Kevin Vaughn.

The first Clinic was a huge success. Thirteen attended, and we all learned so much.

A big thank you to Toby Lander of Young's Garden Center in Roseburg, OR for the great video of the classroom part of the clinic. Now every one can see a part of what we experienced. Just wish you all could have been there for the garden tour and seedling evaluation sessions.
Post containing links to all 4 parts of the video:

Photos and comments from the clinic can be found on the second page of this thread.

Salem, OR at Kevin Vaughn's gardens.

1.First clinic would be when the rosettes are at their best so we can do the judging/ evaluation of new seedlings and work out how the seedlings are grown and rowed out for evaluation. (End of April or beginning of May).

2. Second clinic would be about the process of hybridizing. (In the summer).

More information to come.

Care of Seedlings
JungleShadows said:Years ago an iris friend suggested a way to push seedlings was to use an every other week treatment of a transplant fertilizer like Start N Grow. I use one cap full/ gallon of water. Water gently with a watering can. Mine are mulched with gravel and I let the fertilizer solution drizzle on the gravel not the plants so as not to wash away the roots or deposit soil over the rosettes. For general watering I use an overhead sprinkler that simulates rain. That gives a gentle enough application that the seedlings are not moved or flooded. Nice rain here today so no need to water.

Anyway, this fertilizer regime seems to work beautifully for almost any sort of seedling in order to get them up to mature size the most quickly. The only exceptions are things like penstemon that don't require/ like a lot of fertilizer. Even with them I give them some Start N Grow right after transplanting. My bearded iris seedlings that were rowed out the first week of May now already have increases. Not bad for 6 weeks of growth.

Now to get us all into pollinating and harvesting the seed. Hurray!

So when are we going to have our PNW Semp breeding workshop? Seems like we have enough knowledge and interest in our neck of the woods. Sticking tongue out Whistling

I think we should talk with Kevin and see if he would be willing to do something like that. He is such an amazing teacher and has such a passion for what he does.

Wouldn't that be an amazing workshop? Hurray!

We need to see how many we can get together, so it would be worth his efforts.
You Know he doesn't just hybridize sempervivum. He is well known for his daylilies, Siberian Iris, Hostas and much more. : )

I see an outstanding series of plant breeding workshops brewing...

I bet I could round up a few folks from up this way who would at least be interested in a Semp workshop...and maybe one on daylilies, and one on Siberian iris, and one on hostas... Sticking tongue out

I wonder if attendance might be better if we chose a midway point for the Valley folks and the Seattle crowd. Maybe someplace in PDX?

The only downside would be not having the opportunity to see Kevin's work firsthand and perhaps tour your amazing collection as well...but maybe Kevin would be more comfortable not having a bunch of folks tromping around at his place. If it was in PDX, that might be tempting enough for his former colleague who lives there to jump back into the breeding game...hmmmmmmm...

I just heard from Kevin. He would love to do two different clinics, at his place. Hurray!

1.First clinic would be when the rosettes are at their best so we can do the judging/ evaluation of new seedlings and work out how the seedlings are grown and rowed out for evaluation. (Probably in the spring).

2. Second clinic would be about the process of hybridizing. (In the summer).

He would love to see a new crop of hybridizers come along.
It would be wonderful if his former colleague would get back to hybridizing. He might just be doing that already. Smiling

WOW!! This is outstanding! What a wonderful time to be a Semp-nut! Big Grin Hurray! Sticking tongue out

Sounds like there is plenty of time to do some strategizing and make these workshops something extra special. We should start a new thread focusing solely on this event, yes?

Also, I think a vis-a-vis planning session of the PNW folks is in order. Are you and Kevin both in the Salem area?

Hi guys!

Well leave it to Lynn to get the ball rolling. After she proposed the idea of doing a workshop on hybridizing, I realized this needs to be in two parts. One where we learn how to grow seedlings and then evaluate keepers from not keepers. That part of the program would be in the spring, when the rosettes are at their best color and when the seedlings are ready to be transplanted so that both of these issues could be covered. In the "good ol' days", Bill Nixon would come up and visit each spring and help with the evaluation of the seedlings, plus there was an extensive planting at the Crane estate in Dalton MA where cultivars were evaluated. Our mantra then was DISTINCTIVE and I think that still is the most important criterion. No sense in duplicating the past. In those days, it was possible to have virtually every cultivar available. Much harder now, although the Internet has given us pictures of many things that we don't grow ourselves.

The second part would be on the actual crossing, including the mechanics of the pollination and protecting the blossoms from insect crossing, choosing parents, and collecting and storing the seed. I may have a surprise visitor for that one. Stay tuned!!!

Besides my own material, I have ~85 coming from Fernwood Nursery in the UK to add to my collection of ~300 so there should be a lot to see. I'll try to schedule this first session during either peak daffodil or early bearded iris bloom seasons so there will be much else to see. The Willamette Valley is alive with nurseries so it should be a good vacation.

Hope these agendas sound good to you!

Kevin
