We were in Wimberley, TX this past weekend and I saw these "animals" as we were walking back to the car. I thought of the garden art group hunkered down for a long winter with nothing to do. Start gathering tin, weathered wood, tin snips and some ge-gaws for eyes!

Those are pretty cool! I bet they're a lot more work than one would think. Were they for sale or someone's personal collection?

Some were for sale up on the Square, but there was an entire garden of them in a courtyard on the way to the city's parking lot. I don't think those were for sale. Looked like they were created by the same artist. Possibly, the city had purchased those.

Here is my metal yard art. I picked him up at a flea market from a "Snowbird" who made them during the winter then brought them down here to sell. I'll have to look for him again in a few months. :)

Cool Sandy!! Do you know if there was a framework to start? A sort of skeleton? I'd think they'd have to have some support, especially the larger or taller ones.
Thanks! Inspiring.

Not sure about framework, but I'm going back this week on a nursery run. I'll take a better look. I would think that they were "formed" on some kind of metal (?) pipe, then slipped off to add the legs. They seem to be a little light weight.

I just thought of them as "inspiration," since most of us don't have a welding set-up. I'd be snipping, gluing, and hammering onto a piece of dried mesquite wood!

Me too about the snipping, gluing and hammering.
Don't have dried mesquite.

But I was thinking that using one of those wooden sawhorses as a base, then adding a neck, etc., might work for a big animal.
If I had a sawhorse.

Whenever Hank would hire a carpenter, the first thing he asked him (he never had any women apply Shrug! - to do was build a set of sawhorses.

Lovely pieces there Sandi... the armadillo is a natural fo that construction... I'd be suprised if there was a formwork inside... the joined pannels are a natural exoskeleton..
Vic... there used to be a first task test you'd hear being given... when showing up for work.. for inside carpentery it was build a saw horse... you could tell in 10 minutes what you could ask of them to do..and they wouldn't have messed up anything you were interested in making.. and it was always useful throughout the day.. as a cutting table or lift... for framing carpentery.. it was hay .. bring that box of nails up to me .. which would require them to bring it up walking along a joist like a tight rope walker.. if they couldn't bring them selves to do it.. were unstable.. or sat down and scooted them selves across to you .. you knew they were to be of limited value.. it was also the origional drug test for shape up / or new workers... not so much if they were or got high... but at the start of work could they still do it...

Thanks Becky!
We went back to Wimberley, Monday. The first two pics are just because I liked 'em! I grew up believing Jack rabbits really had horns because my dad had pointed them out in a gift shop in Mexico (and he wouldn't try to trick a 5 yr old, would he?).

These show that most all the figures had wooden bases of some kind.
