This thread probably belongs in the Perennials Forum, but I suspect we Pacific Coasters are the only ones able to grow these plants successfully.

Unless you spend your whole day browsing around in the database, you probably don't know that Sue just uploaded about 700 delicious Fuchsia photos from the Earthworks site. Here's the "A" page. So pretty! (Edited to say that the "A" page was really impressive when I posted this and there were only a few hundred fuchsias in our database. Now there are thousands and thousands.)

http://garden.org/plants/brows...

Something to look at in winter. Smiling

I have a lot of shady spots in my garden and they're mostly full of violets. But how many violets does a garden really need? I'm planning to grow lots of upright Fuchsias in the shady parts of my garden from now on. I now have 51 Fuchsias and I'm getting more and more excited by them all the time.

We used to have a local nursery here that sold gorgeous hanging baskets of Fuchsias, but the nursery has since moved into a smaller space and probably won't carry them anymore, so I'll be buying the trailing Fuchsia starts from Earthworks and creating my own baskets. Please tell me, if you can, how many plants I should plant in each basket to achieve a nice full look. Will three be enough?

And because I know that threads with a thumbnail photo are more likely to be read, I'm adding a photo of Fuchsia 'Minnesota' to this thread.

When I was a young girl, my mother and I visited a woman who lived in the foothills of Snoqualmie Pass - probably now North Bend or some such. She had a long curvey driveway to her home, with fuschias set in stumps along the way. It was a lasting impression.

Wow! That's exciting. I'll just continue buying them on line. I received 12 cuties from them a few days ago. They were on sale for $2.50 each. They're hardy here, but I'm thinking of keeping these new ones inside until the end of February, or at least bringing them in at night when there's frost in the forecast.

That's probably a good idea because i'm sure they are fresh out of the greenhouse. What ones did you get? They have so many it would be hard to choose.

BH that would be pretty. Fuchsias in stumps with the forest as a back drop.

We do grow fushias in colder zones---most often as annuals.
This year I have brought several into the house, and will keep them for making cuttings.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's I had quite a nice collection of trailing (basket) fuchsia's. They love it here in this climate, but then the dreaded fuchsia gall mite arrived on the scene and killed off every one I had, along with the arrival of the giant white fly. It was an unholy alliance that caused me to swear off fuchsias until recently. In the interim, the gall mite problem seems to have gone away, thankfully.

Here is one that I'm still not 100% clear on the name of. I suspect it's Jack Sieverns. I originally saw it growing at the Madonna Inn and it was about 15' tall in full sun. I snagged cuttings of it and have it growing under a pink Melaleuca tree in full sun. I keep it topped at 12' because it's easier to manage that way. Talk about PROLIFIC. This thing is loaded with flowers from April through December. Then I cut it back to it's bare bones and by February it's leafing out like crazy.

The bloom isn't anything spectacular, but it is pretty especially in mass quantities.Thumb of 2012-11-16/Calsurf73/3feff9 Thumb of 2012-11-16/Calsurf73/7c7e1b

Wow that's fatastic! Love those colors.
Heres one of my hardy fuchsias. A common one but I have forgotten the name. It has very bright green leaves until a hard frost and red flowers.Thumb of 2012-11-16/springcolor/a17049
At my garden club a fuchsia expert spoke to us and she said fuchsias like sun. The reason they are keep in the shade house is that there roots need to stay cool. Also, she said when you get a new hardy fuchsia to dig it down a few inches like you would a tomato, then over the growing season gradually put soil over the base of the plant. Protects the roots and even if a frost takes the plant to the ground it should come back from the base. She had some beautiful pictures.

Wow Mike, that is one awesome plant!
Annie's Annuals carries many of the smaller sweet blooms that are mite resistant, I have a couple. I have seen a few of the larger shrubs around town here, my friend has this one. Once my daughters big dogs are moved out, I have an area where I want to add some like this.

That's so pretty. Looked at Annies but, no none of those. They are very beautiful but to tender for my zone. Some years we are 8 and others 7. I try not to buy things that only go as low as 8, they never servive for long. I got white fly in my greenhouse one year from fuchsias, never went back to that nursery agan. They are out of business now, wonder why.

I remember the great Fuchsia collections people had in the 1980s and early 1990s, Mike. My own collection wasn't that spectacular, but I had a few dozen cultivars. Swingtime was the only one that survived the gall mite plague.

I don't doubt that Fuchsias like the sun in Washington, Springcolor, but when I try growing Fuchsias in the sun here, I have to water them twice a day. Too much bother, so they all go in the shade.

Are you folks saying it's safe to try fushias again? I gave mine up because of gall mites too. Sad

I had thought that the problem had been eliminated because I haven't had any signs of gall mites on my fuchsias for the last few years, but I can't find any recent information by googling.

And then there's the problem of reliability. Here's a paragraph from one seemingly reliable source:

"The best way to prevent fuchsia gall mites is to plant cultivars that are either resistant to the pest or have low susceptibility. These varieties include Baby Chang, Chance Encounter, Carnival, Cinnabarina, Fuschia boliviana, Fuschia minutiflora, Fuschia microphylla ssp. "Hindalgensis,” Fuschia radicans, Fuschia thymifolia, Isis, Mendocino Mini, Miniature Jewels, Mrs. Victor Reiter, Ocean Mist, Space Shuttle and Trumpeter."

How can a source be reliable if it misspells fuchsia five times in one paragraph? Hilarious!
