Here's a critter that visits our lawns and gardens here in the south. They mean no harm but they go rooting and digging in the garden for insects and larvae. I appreciate their help in eradicating many kinds of insects but I sure wish their mama's had taught them to cover the holes after they get done digging. Green Grin!

Squirrels!!

Although these furry little critters are really cute, they can be a real nuisance in the garden. They not only raid the bird feeders but they will eat the fruit from your fruit trees, steal veggies from your vegetable garden, dig up corms and bulbs ... and even snatch the entire heads from sunflowers to hoard the seeds. These little critters seem to have voracious appetites ... but I must admit, I'd miss their antics if they weren't around!

"Pocket gophers, are burrowing rodents that get their name from the fur-lined, external cheek pouches, or pockets, they use for carrying food and nesting materials. They live in a burrow system that can cover an area that is 200 to 2,000 square feet. Feeding burrows usually are 6 to 12 inches below ground, and the nest and food storage chamber can be as deep as 6 feet. Blinking Crying
They feed on many garden crops, ornamental plants, vines, shrubs, and trees. A single gopher moving down a garden row can inflict considerable damage in a very short time. Gophers also gnaw and damage plastic water lines and lawn sprinkler systems. Their tunnels can divert and carry off irrigation water, which leads to soil erosion. Mounds on lawns interfere with mowing equipment and ruin the aesthetics of well-kept turfgrass."

Before, taken last year and after, taken a couple of days ago of my pretty Betony (Betonica officinalis subsp. officinalis 'Hummelo')
This time one had a tunnel underneath but came to the surface to snatch all the stems. I thought a weed whacker got it.

I sometimes smell one when we are sitting upstairs in our bedroom, like it just walked by on the patio. The past couple of weeks I have had one spot in the weedy area of the yard where some animal is leaving it's deposits, at first I thought raccoon but checking online, it matches skunk scat.

Fox also has stations that they leave scat, it's how they mark their territory. With time it becomes a mound.

Just found some of these on a dogwood and katsura tree. The offenders have been removed. Not sure what type of caterpillar they are.

They look like Tent caterpillars. http://plantdiagnostics.umd.ed...
Good thing you removed them. Watch for them showing up in other trees.

Fortunately for me, they seem to prefer our alder trees, which grow like weeds, so there is plenty to share. Some years are worse than others, and we haven't had a bad caterpillar year in a while, so it just may be time for a cycle. As destructive as they can be to the foliage, the trees generally survive, they just look awful. If I can reach the tents and catch them early, it is easy enough to just snip off the branch and burn them while the caterpillars are little and haven't traveled far from the nest.

That's what we did when we discovered them one year in our apple trees. We clipped all the branches with nests and burned them. They never came back.
