If you exclude any other features of the plant and judged purely on the deliciousness of the fragrance, I'd like to hear peoples' absolute favourites. Mine would be Freesia, Rose, Violet, Daphne odora, Wintersweet, Lonicera fragrantissima and Sweet Osmanthus, not necessarily in that order.

Absolutely agree with the above, though Osmanthus fragrans gets big enough to make some shade, a worthy attribute for any entity.

Moonflower vine (always speckled with spider mites) and 4'o'clocks (Mirabilis jalapa,) kind of a gangly looking plant with boring plain green leaves. The dead wrinkled flowers is all one sees except very early or late in the day on both of these.

Oriental lilies. Sure they're pretty, but only there for about a week, no face is pretty enough for that to be OK, but add the scent & it's worth finding space for a few.

When I lived in OH I got a mock orange (Philadelphus) shrub just for the scented blooms.

Dying to sniff Hoya, so considering buying one, just to wait for the blooms...

I hopefully will get to enjoy Philadelphus scent this year, last year it was new so the flowers were few and too close to the ground to smell them, as my husband kept accidentally mowing over it!

Awww, hopefully when he gets a whiff, he'll remember what a great shrub it is (and that it's there!) Tie a colorful piece of string to it? A little flag? A brick/rock by the trunk?

Plumeria!!!!!! If you smell this, you will want to make room in your home for a 'tree' in the winter.

I thought I was growing Brugmansia for the scent. For years I read about how wonderful the fragrance is, but apparently it's only scented when I'm in the house for the night, and starts blooming so late in the season, windows are sometimes closed already. Hard to waft in the house that way. The few times I've ventured out to be eaten by mosquitoes while I sniff, I wasn't impressed with the fragrance at all. I'm not going to get rid of them, but need to move them. I want something in that spot that will waft really amazing fragrance into the house when people are awake.

Nobody mentions Orchids?
Many Orchids smell absolutely wonderful. As an example - Neofinetia falcata are small, easy to care for plants, and they usually flower in the Spring towards Summer around here. The blooms are charming and their scent of mainly Vanilla and Jasmine in the evening is downright heavenly.

Ursula, that's an excellent point. I was sniffing orchids yesterday and none had a scent. It sounds like these are another with night scent only? That would be OK in a potted plant. I do not know what kind they were, except that they're the kind they always have at L's, when they do have orchids. Stunningly pretty but I don't know how people drive them home intact. That's what stopped me from getting one, like always. If I ever see one without a flower stalk, or with a stalk just beginning, I'm so buying it!!

Tiffany, most likely you saw Phalaenopsis at L's, and you will be surprised how sturdy those stems are. But, these are usually not fragrant. Many Cattleyas have a wonderful scent, usually really noticeable when the flowers are in a warm and sunny spot.

TY, Ursula. I've long been an admirer of those 'regular' ones. I need another addiction like I need another body part that's supposed to be shaved often, but hearing that orchids can be so pretty and scented too is excruciatingly tempting! Usually we're trying to escape warm, sunny spots around here, so theoretically would be great, though there's none to be found today. Thanks for the info & enable.

This orchid has a wonderful fragrance -- reminiscent of lilacs.

Thanks Joanne. The fragrance is very subtle. At first I thought it had no fragrance, but one day I was walking down the hall and as I turned the corner, this lovely lilac fragrance came wafting out of the family room. Whistling

Yes, that seems to be the case with many that even have blooms open during the day. That's why I'm moving my Brugs.

If I may jump in here - The odor of blooms evolved to attract specific pollinators. The intensity of the scent will be strongest at the time of day that pollinator is around to do the job of pollinating. If you have a flower pollinated by a moth, your bloom will most likely be scented at sundown. Bee pollinated blooms might be mostly scented at day time and so on.
