At 5'-6" tall and still growing, this is my tallest Voodoo Lily (Amorphophallus konjac) inflorescence yet. It's also the first to bloom indoors and yes, it was banished to an unused bedroom for two days. To my nose, not the unanimous opinion, it started out with a slightly spicy, metallic odor and went downhill from there.

These photos were taken, left to right, March 2, 6 and 11.

These photos were taken March 12.

Female anthesis March 13. There was a clear sticky fluid on the pistils(?).

Male anthesis on March 14. The spathe really opened up.

The tuber has experienced significant shrinkage. It started out at ~10" dia., about 1/2" from edge of this pot. It's now ~6 1/2" dia.

Here's Cobra Lily (Arisaema ringens) which bloomed about a month ago. I'm thinking about where to find it a home in the garden. It's pretty small and the inflorescence is only about 8-10" above the soil.

There are plenty of hot summer Amorphs and Cobra Lilies. It might be fun trying to compile a list of species that grow in "hot and dry" summer areas. Maybe some of the African or Madagascar Amorphs?

No I didn't Drew. I don't think I'll have any other blooms this year but next year I have a few that should be blooming size. If things work out I'll be saving pollen and giving it a shot.

Fab pics Evan! I received my first Amorphophallus konjac corms in the post this morning. The oldest is only 3yrs old so I have a few years before they bloom yet. Does anyone have any tips for a newbie?

Compared to the offsets your tuber looks pretty sizable Kate. The tubers can double in diameter in a single growing so you may not have to wait that long for a bloom.

I was advised to grow these in full sun in a very well draining soil and I believe that is sound advice. My best tuber growth has occurred, I have sandy loam, by planting 8 to 10 inches deep in soil which I have amended with my own compost. I add a balanced time release fertilizer as well as bone meal and occasional water soluble fertilizer (high P). Many growers suggest using ferts. with a higher P number.

Because our cool autumn temperatures , late September/early October, are usually accompanied by lots of rain, tuber rot can be a concern. I lift the tubers before they would naturally go dormant. I experimented last year by amending the soil in a hole 2 feet wide. I then removed 12"D x 10"W of soil and replaced it with composted pine bark for the 5"W tuber. I'm guessing this technique is overkill, but the tuber doubled in diameter and there was no rot.

Best of luck with yours!

Thanks for sharing your experience and advice Evan, I'm looking forward to seeing some foliage this summer and I'll follow your fertilising regime, in the hope that I might even see s bloom in a year or two - so exciting!

Mine aren't out of dormancy yet though probably will be soon since the soil is warming up.

You're welcome Kate - Good Luck. I wonder if Janet, @JRsbugs, has any experience with these in the UK?

Are yours planted in ground Anne?

They are in pots .. I tried one in the ground 2 years ago and it rotted away.
