Great podcast, Dave and Trish, and Curt!

It was nice to hear from a seasoned daylily grower/hybridizer. Curt didn't hold back, telling it like it is, including the tediousness of record-keeping. (Well, it sure gets tedious to me!) You can tell he's enjoyed learning and "playing" over the years with his garden plants. Thanks for sharing, Curt.

Dave, I've known for years you like crape myrtles, too, but had no idea you were so hooked you now have over a hundred different varieties! I'm jealous. I guess now the Whitinger kids will one day be taking cuttings to root and offering them through their seed company, eh!? (hint, hint, children! Thumbs up

Glad I finally took time to listen, have been running a bit behind in all I do these days it seems. Looking forward to the next one!

Happy Gardening!

Hi Shoe, I'm glad you liked the podcast. I really enjoyed talking with Curt. It's always nice to have a guest that is easy to talk to and who really knows his stuff.

As for crepe myrtles, I might have mis-spoke. I do have over a hundred crepe myrtles planted, but they are not individual varieties. I might have 20 different cultivars here. Every year I add new ones!!

I love your new avatar. You're looking great!

Well, 20 cultivars of crape myrtles is more than I have...maybe one day though!

As for my avatar, that was this past Thanksgiving, and I'm itching to get rid of the winter beard now, at least by half. After all, it's nearly tomato planting time and most folks around here won't set out their tomatoes til they see my winter beard trimmed back. Smiling

Heheheh, yeh, it's one of the local phenology signs. For decades people knew when my beard was finally trimmed the air temperature was just right, the ground temperature has warmed up enough, and the coolness of the nights was just enough to encourage abundant fruit production.

Unfortunately one year I trimmed my winter beard in February for a school event my daughter was in. Dang if people didn't set out their tomatoes. And, of course they all froze. It's been over ten years now and some of those folks haven't spoken to me yet. Whistling

Won't be long now!

Vic, I just noticed the photo doesn't show my balding head. My forehead is getting taller I suppose to balance out the abundance of chin hairs. Maybe I can resize the photo and get more of me in.

Hope you survived last nights freeze; hope you get to set out tomatoes soon.

It hasn't been all that long since we've seen you and you're not bald - ok, maybe receding Green Grin!

I hope I can get my tomatoes in the ground too. Some have blossoms already Thumbs up

Just watched the podcast and found it very interesting. I really enjoyed the part about direct sowing. I knew daylilies could self sow if left alone, and I may have a few in my garden now because I certainly didn't plant something where one is coming up.

Curt sounds very down to earth and practical. I like his approach to hybridizing and am even more glad now that I have Primal Scream in my garden.
