Found this coming up today. No tag or even a plain marker. I'm pretty good about remembering stuff I put in even if I don't mark it. But this one has me totally stumped!! Now last late summer/early fall I did put a lot of plants in I had gathered from various places so I guess that is why this one is completely a blank for me. I should say ahead of time I appreciate any help, BUT I won't be able to verify possible identities until it gets bigger probably. Unless someone's guess jogs my mind.

The leaves are quite thin and soft. The very center new leaves are light green.

I do have Phlox Laura nearby. It kind of reminds me of that but Laura only has the red on the edge of the leaves and they are a bit more spear shaped. I suppose it could be some kind of mutant phlox

Could it be Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica)? The foliage can sometimes be deeply colored like this when it first emerges.

Funny you should mention that. My neighbor's wife passed away some years ago and had magnificent gardens. I have been allowed to go over there and take whatever I want. Last summer I took quite a few plants. They all came with other stuff that was either in bulb form or dormant things. You see everything there has just grown together in one big mess. Well, I was over there just this past weekend and was delighted so see Virginia Bluebells all over. So it could possibly be that. In addition I saw plants coming up that look just like this picture. So whatever it is I think it is a safe bet that is came from those gardens!

The peach fuzz on the new leaves goes away as they mature.

It is driving me crazy not knowing what the heck this is!

Sure looks vaguely familiar, as so many emerging plant mysteries do.
Do you happen to be growing any dark-leaved Lychnis?

I think it is a type of Euphorbia. I vaguely remember taking some purple Euphorbia from the neighbor.

There would likely be beads of white sap on the pruned stems if it's Euphorbia.

If the edges were just a little more jagged, I would say Salvia lyrata 'Purple Volcano'.

It is slowly coming along. My neighbor and nursery partner has one too! So we bought them together. Crazy neither of us have tags.
