I have two Endless Summer Hydrangeas and they are wilting everyday. I planted them last summer. I am watering them regularly and they are facing east so no sun past 12 or so. I plan on moving them to a spot on the north side of my house, but it is total shade. Will they bloom without any direct sun? Also none of the old wood from last summer leafed out this spring, it regrew all new stems and leaves. Will they still keep wilting every day in the afternoon even if they are facing north? It has been 90 here every day for a week or so and humid. If they are going to wilt constantly and bloom rarely, and not like full shade, I am going to pitch them and choose something else for my north facing spot.

Mine do this even in heavily filtered, all day shade in 90 degree weather. If the plant looks better in the late evening it's probably fine; if not, it likely needs a good soak. Mine had to return from the roots this year, too. Last winter was brutal.

Winter was brutal here as well and so many of mine have bare, dry stems showing. Cutting them back is on my eternal, never ending "to do" list.

It's common for them to wilt with 90 degree weather.

When we get in the 90's they need water just about every day even if in good shade. I finally finished that part of the to do list just a couple of days ago.

do they bloom reliably in zone 6? I figure the old wood would die back every year, and re-grow. Which is ok if they will still bloom. I don't want to keep it if it is going to wilt AND not bloom for me. Are there hydrangeas that don't wilt as much? I also have an Oakleaf and it seems to be doing better and is also in filtered shade.

Panicle hydrangeas don't have as bad of a reaction to high heat here, and they seem to require less water. I very rarely water mine and it still does well...and it's in a sunnier site.

do you think one would bloom in full shade?

I agree with Arlene. Even if they did happen to bloom in full shade, I don't think they'd do it well. If the top half, at the very least, had bright light or filtered sun, it might be able to bloom. Just guessing though.

How long have they been in the ground? Hydrangeas do not wilt in the heat here, it's over 90 every day for months.

Looking at weather.com for Springfield, MO, looks like there's already more rain than in all of June, on average. No plants in ground since last year should need supplemental watering in those conditions. If the spot is muddy, not well-drained, the roots could be rotting/suffocating, like an 'overwatered' potted plant.

My Incrediball wilts in the afternoon heat in zone 5, but is perked back up in the morning. It is planted in a bed that gets the hot afternoon sun, but doesn't seem to burn up. It's been there for at least for years.

We have been getting tons of rain. It is however facing east and somewhat sheltered by the house. It is moist but not soggy there and drains well so I don't think watering is a problem. Our humidity has been really high, sticky and muggy every day. In the evening the plant perks right up and looks great. But during the afternoon, with no sun directly on it, it wilts and looks droopy. This is the Endless Summer kind that has the big fleshy leaves and large balls of flowers.
I planted them last August.

I'm baffled why your shrubs would be wilting. That's the same kind in the pic below. I've made about a dozen babies from ground layering the mama shrubs and none of them ever wilt when separated from the mama & planted elsewhere, unless it doesn't rain for about a week. After a winter has passed, they don't need to be watered at all. Hot & muggy is the milieu of Hydrangeas.
Here's the temps here so far for June:
http://www.weather.com/weather...

Normally I wouldn't be surprised by faux wilt in the afternoon, a common occurrence for a lot of plants, but for a Hydrangea on the east side of the house, it's daggone strange.

Maybe a pic could help folks decipher the problem?

I could get a pic, but it is raining right now, so maybe tomorrow. The shrubs have grown quite alot since I planted them and we had a really bad winter and they took *forever* to grow this spring. I thought they might have died, but finally they started sprouting out. No blooms but had blooms when I bought it.

If you want a no wilt hydrangea for the north side of the house, you can't beat the old-fashioned, boring white snowball type! Ours have been planted on the north side of the house for at least 40 years. They do well but they are, well, boring!

ha ha like the spray paint idea, cool.
Well these will be on the north side plus there are trees there, so lots of shade, hardly no sun at all.

My Hydrangeas are wilting too. They look better when the sun goes down. It's normal. I water them about twice a week. Mine died to the ground this year too but are starting to bloom. I have Hydrangea 'Twist 'n Shout' which normally blooms twice but this year it is only blooming once. My double Hydrangea called Forever and Ever 'Together' died to the ground too. Both of these bloom on new wood and old wood.

I wouldn't give up on them yet.
