Post what gardening things you did today, and anything else you want to share about your findings. Applies all year and for indoor/outdoor gardening.

I trimmed our Privet hedges by hand, took 6 hours to prune off every badly positioned branch. Now they look dead and I've got blisters on my hands, and I have to clean up all these branches ugh! but all branches point up and hopefully will all fill in with straight, new branches.

Did some watering.

My apple tree finally opened its flowers so my yard has an apple scent.

Newborn gypsy moth caterpillars are falling on me from the trees, they are kinda cute and around here are kept in check. as well as maple pollen falling, ahh-choo!

I prepped an area to plant daylily seedlings in:

Earlier, I planted three chrysanthemums and set up temporary shading for them:

Keith, hope that privet grows nicely for you after all that work!

I got the chicken poop and shavings from my neighbor's chicken coop and added them to the compost pile.

I was in the middle of cleaning my coop this morning when a thunderstorm rolled in...so I moved inside. I fixed a small electrical issue in my garage after that and got my grow lights running, so I will be starting a batch of microgreens this week. As soon as it stops raining I hope to pot up some sweet potato vines and hang them in baskets around my yard. This year I'm trying to stick a plant in every sunny pocket I have.

...Ran the soaker hoses in our two shade gardens, as well as in our full sun beds. poured some diluted fish emulsion on our bamboo plants as well as our arborvitae hedge. moved our four rose pots to a more strategic location on the deck in order to allow exposure to the sun first thing in the morning. cut the dying flowers off our Pink Champagne Clematis. watered our hardy Geraniums. also made the decision do dig up and toss out or infected heuchera "Venus" plants...

Prepped the second daylily seedling area, will plant out tomorrow. (Planted the first one, but I think that was yesterday? Hilarious! ) (Edit: Hahaha I forgot how early I started this morning! It was this morning I planted that first tray.)

Weeded this border, by moving the brick edging and digging out the grass, then replacing the edging:
Thumb of 2015-05-09/kylaluaz/663718

Still have this section to go:
Thumb of 2015-05-09/kylaluaz/12bfad

I also cut the dead canes out of the hardy hibiscus, cleaned up a bunch of hyacinth flower stalks and worked them into the compost. Did some watering.

That border weeding didn't take as long as I thought it would, which is nice, but I quit because it got hot out there. Sticking tongue out

Plopped some fresh compost in a spare sunny patch of dirt and planted a buttercup winter squash seedling in it, with its very own handmade trellis to vertically garden when it starts vining. Also doled out some of that compost to four tomato plants that already have flowers. And hand watered, because there has been NO rain all month so far. And brushed the dog, who is shedding. That is a garden chore because the shed fur is placed strategically to deter bunnies. Tomorrow I need to get some strings up for the pole beans to climb.

Enjoyed watching my sons work on converting my preformed pond into a pondless water feature on Mother's Day (heavy lifting involved). Today I started my annual top dressing with a compost mix - got two sections of my herb garden done (pacing self).

Today I watered and weeded, mostly, and brought home a bunch of pots from a friend who is downsizing. I also harvested most of the lettuce and bagged up some to share with neighbors.

Yesterday I had to drag the hoses and sprinklers out to water the grass, that should be the last time as DH turned on the irrigation system this morning. I also had to dig up a plant that was threatening to take over, I think it is a sage plant, it is now contained in a large pot. I didn't put a tag last year and it's been a long winter. Hilarious!

Didn't have time to do too much outside today, I did get the fountain up and running, birds were very happy.

I was supposed to stay indoors from the rain and clean the house, do laundry etc. I did do some of that. But I snuck out to the greenhouse and potted up some Peperomia cuttings, repotted a Christmas Cactus and prepped a Plumeria cutting for a friend. I rewrote some plant ID tags with Latin names and looked for other excuses not to go back inside. Rolling my eyes.

It is really cold today so I don't know if I'll get out to do anything, but yesterday I potted on a bunch of seedlings, some started indoors and some wintersown. Lupines, canna lilies, gallardia, Armenian basket flower, etc. I am planning to start more inside today as a lot of my wintersown perennials did nothing (yet anyway).
North of us they are even supposed to get snow! I have lots and lots of stuff that needs to get out in the garden, but oh well! It should be warmer later this week.

I got brave this morning and planted out a sacrificial tomato plant along with some red basil. Yesterday I put out a few petunias and some alyssum. We shall see. It's nice and overcast and supposed to rain tomorrow, so it seemed like a good time. Not SUPPOSED to have any more freezing temps. Heh.

Cold, cloudy and windy here, so I'm getting the heaviest full-sun work done today and tomorrow. It'll be short duration, morning or late evening trips only in those areas soon enough. I didn't get much tree trimming done last year (we were too busy with the ones that needed to be removed), so that and thistle extraction has been top priority this morning. Pretty soon I'll switch gears and start putting up some frost protection. Rolling my eyes.

I'd rather be working with seeds and seedlings, but their time will come around again pretty soon, I guess. Big Grin

Outside at 5:30 to beat the heat, rinsed out all the containers I was given yesterday (that's all I'll do, no more thorough cleaning cause too time consuming) stowed out of sight the ones I won't be using right away.

Finished the claypot border on the Butterfly Bed ( these may or may not be turned over and planted in eventually... probably will) :
Thumb of 2015-05-12/kylaluaz/5c3b19

Planted the iris that had been sitting around that edge in black plastic pots since the winter:
Thumb of 2015-05-12/kylaluaz/4155d2

Felt good to get that done! Then went with cousin-in-law to pick up more potting soil, also bought a four pack of spinach and a little Euphorbium Diamond Frost to go with the other one I got... both of those on sale for a dollar. Spinach variety 'Space' -- how could I resist that for a dollar? Green Grin!

It's raining. I can't mow the lawn. The house is clean enough and laundry is put away. I will go clean up the greenhouse. I sort of left a mess in there yesterday accidentally on purpose. Whistling

It's been a busy 2 days since I got home. Watering took precedence yesterday which gave me time to examine tomatoes for bugs, disease, etc. Mixed up a spray bottle with Epsom Salt and water and gave each one a light mist. I spotted some damaged leaves on a Peach Tree so I photographed them and posted a query here.

Also took the time to feed my flowers, Ficus Tree, Tomatoes and Strawberry plants. Gave the blueberries and Raspberries a 1/2 dose feeding.

Also searched CraigsList to see if anyone wants to get rid of some old clay pots and found an upcoming estate sale. I'll check them out today.

Finally, I raked up called Peach Tree Leaves and spread coffee grounds and egg shells in the garden. Later on a play date for my dog I admired a friend's Plumeria, Gardenas and flowers. A good day, indeed.

Spent a couple hours at my favorite nursery, then prepped and planted my tomato bed. I only grow 5 or so plants each year (for fresh eating) and have been tracking what I like and don't like. I am slowly narrowing it down to what does best for me, but the next trick is to remember where I got them! And. not all nurseries get the same stock each year. So, still a challenge. This year I was able to find 3 of my favs (Sweet Mojo, Sweet Million, Sun Sugar) and am trying 3 new to me (Bloody Butcher, Moskvich, Lemon Cherry). All indeterminate and fairly early.

Had plans to get the rest of my plants in the ground, but then it started raining (I'm a fair weather gardener).
