This is a 3' shrub composed of long unbranched arching stems. I think its a spring bloomer but there was this one flower now.......with buds all the way along the stems.

Is it growing wild or is it in a garden?

Gives me a Euphorbia vibe, but no idea of what to suggest.

The flowers suggest Rosaceae. I've looked at Euphorbia, Lysimachia, Cotoneaster, and Wax Myrtle which shows similarity to the leaves and habit, but not the flowers.

It might help to know if it's native growing wild, in a private garden or botanical garden.

Bear in mind that it could be a plant which has been cut back, making it produce several long shoots.

The flowers are quite similar to Leptospermum .. I have grown L. nitidum, they have a small well in the centre where nectar pools.

It seems to be in Myrtaceae, Tea-trees grow very long bendy stems. Leptospermum petersonii is very similar, there is some leaf venation showing on the close up photo.

It is growing in a garden. The person growing it asked me about it. They didn't plant it. But could have been planted long ago by a person or otherwise. I'll have another look at it today and see if it is scented in any way and check for a nectar pool. It's not a euphorbia for sure. The coloration is just fall color. It's normal leaf color is a pale yellowish green if I remember rightly. Ill check out the base of it too to check its growth pattern for sure. As always my compliments to all. Thats it Sherry and Janet. I couldn't detect the scent but will check it again in spring or summer. It has been cut at to about six inches in the past. I'm suprised to read that its a small tree or large shrub but this looks to be a match. I'll mark this solved. Thanks you all.

I planted one on the first property we owned in Fallbrook, then planted one on the second property that we sold two years ago. I love the plant so much that I should have planted many of them and here where nurseries are few and far between (good ones), it is on my list of wants. I do not know if it will make it here, though I'm currently growing some Aussies here and have a friend 45 miles north who grows a lot of Aussies. The small Botanical Garden in Brookings, Oregon has leptos and leucadendrons, etc., so I'm hoping that mine will do okay here. Brookings is a bit more of a Banana Belt due to the "Chetco River Effect", much like our Santa Anas in SoCal...warm inland air flowing from the interior to the sea. I'm only guessing at petersonii, if it is not lemon scented, then it's an incorrect guess.

All I can say is that it does look like Leptospermum petersonii, it is grown in the US by San Marcos growers which is north of Los Angeles and I checked out other Leptospermums they were offering, this is the only one which matches. A shot of one showing the new coloured foliage ..

It is obvious from the shots Leslieray provided that the plant has been cut back to near the ground, making it produce long shoots.

As a kid growing up in Aus on a farm, me and my brothers used to weave the long shoots of tea-tree to make a hideout, those were the days before kids had all sorts of manufactured rubbish thrust upon them but not everybody was fortunate to live in the country on a farm. The dirt road to our farm was a mile from the main road, there was plentiful wildflowers, bottlebrushes and tea-trees along the side of the road. I went back about 25 years ago and there was nothing left, it had all been stripped. How sad that human beings can do so much damage to the fauna and flora where there is no need.

Aussies will grow quite readily here and my friend who had a nursery here until two years ago grows a lot of them...however, she had never encountered the petersonii. There is a new nursery here and though he grows mostly standard stuff for this area, he is receptive to new things, especially since Rebecca had given a lot of Aussies to the Garden Club for their Botanical Garden and these gardeners are now knowledgeable about other plants that will grow here. Her Uncle, who is 90 years old, also is a great fan of the Aussie plants and grows a lot, constantly scattering seed over his extensive property to encourage naturalizing.

Yes, the destruction of natural, wild vegetation is also troubling to me. Since we've moved up here to the far Northwestern corner of California, I'm constantly astounded by the vegetation I find alongside all of the roads, etc. I find that I'm very often asking, "What IS that?"....lol..

I remember those days so long ago when the best toy was a good imagination and a natural setting was the best playground one could have. Still is if you can find one.
