Is anyone getting ready to winter sow? I've been holding off because it has been too warm. But temps are going back down next week.

I'm waiting for my large order from Seedaholic to arrive. It will likely be here some time next week. I have most of my other seeds. In the coming days I'll be prepping my jugs/bins. So far I have about 40 things I'm going to sow. BUT the plan this year is to sow only a few seeds of each!! Rolling on the floor laughing

I'm already asking hubby where I can take out the next section of grass!

Looks like I was winter sowing and didn't know it!! I was experimenting with my containers and have a small jug over my arugula and it's still hanging in there from me starting it in September

I'm up in the air. We're planning to do a fair amount of traveling so I'm not sure how much seed growing I'll do this year, either indoors or wintersown. That's also why I didn't join in on the seed swaps.

I just got some grow lights for Christmas, so I'll be sowing daylily seeds indoors; but, I might get 1-2 more grow lights and start growing some of my veggies or other flowers (petunias, etc) indoors, too.

I prepped 22 jugs and five bins today. Tomorrow I sow! I have 36 different things I will start. I also sorted all the seeds I have so far and made a schedule for sowing them.

Somehow "restraint" isn't a word that comes to mind when I think "Jennifer" and "wintersowing" ;-O

It is nice to have extras to either sell or give away.
So few people start from seeds anymore.

Hi All and Happy New Year! Happy Gardening in 2016!!!!

I, too, plan on wintersowing a bunch of flower seeds in milk jugs. I tried last year but only had a little luck due to my own fault. My question is what kind of soil should I use? I have a dirt mixture that I mixed up over the summer and wonder if it will work. It is made up of regular dirt, bagged garden soil, bagged top soil, cow manure, and rabbit manure. Do you think this would work in the milk jugs or should I just use potting soil or seed starter? I think I remember using seed starter before and the water wouldn't soak in very good. Also I have some Vermiculite. Should I add some of this to the soil? I also have a bag of potting soil and a bag of peat moss. Should I also add some of these?

Any suggestions on soil would be appreciated.
Yard decor, repurposing, and flowers,

I put layer of Miracle Grow Moisture control on the bottom and of the jug and Promix on top. I'm often very late in the season getting stuff moved out of jugs. I feel this way they have some fertilizer when the roots get to the bottom. I have no idea if my theory is true. But this is what works for me.

I just use a commercial potting soil.
Good drainage is most important.
It does not need to be all that rich with manure etc.
as you will be transplanting the seedlings.

Seed starter mixes would make it too expensive for me.

I also use just moist vermiculite for WS and that works well.
The vermiculite is in small plastic containers instead of milk jugs.

Jeanne, you don't want SOIL you want a POTTING MIX. Potting mixes are made of components like peat, coir, perlite, and vermiculite and don't contain any soil. As Caroline said, good drainage is essential.
