I think it's the first show of the Florida season...in Sarasota ..
They had a really pretty display at the entrance..I'm not sure if the backdrop is a painting or photograph ..but I thought it was VERY effective!

There were tons of amazing plants with ribbons..and if my hands weren't so full
I might have taken more pictures , but this pretty Den. caught my eye.

I saw the list of orchid vendors on line yesterday and looked at their various websites. I emailed a few of them to see if any of my wish list plants were available and the very nice folks at Palmer Orchids made sure that I went home with a couple
of their plants.

The VERY nice folks at Plantio
made sure I went home with 2 Recc Frances Fox ( one for me and one for my sister Angel )

I noticed that they have different tags though...one says Frances Fox 'Sun Spot' and the other says Frances Fox meristem....are they different?
and from the folks at Krull -Smith I found an impulse item..they had several and I exercised restraint...

It's cute as a button, just starting to open and is so tiny it would fit on a window sill!

Wonderful, Lindsey and thanks for starting this thread. I'll be going to the show tomorrow so will try to add some pictures, plus of course add to my collection as well . . .

Sure hope you have better luck than I did with Frances Fox - I love it but . . . I've had mine for 2 years, it has given me exactly one flower in that time, and is slowly dying on me for no good reason that I can see. I paid a bundle for it, too - the most I've ever spent on one orchid. I think Jim has one, too

Sarasota orchid show today was fun, but quite a bit smaller than it has been in the past. My friend and I each bought one orchid - I got another V. Lou Sneary 'Blue Bird' just because it has been such a good grower for me.

I've been wanting to go visit Palmer Orchids out in Myakka for a while now, and my friend now wants to come with me, so it will probably happen in the near future. They surely had the best selection of different genera at the show. Lots of lovelies. Second picture is a Lycaste cross that has spectacular flowers at least 5in. across. Love it but a little leery of anything that needs cooler weather - given recent weather patterns although today is very cool and rainy.

Our local friends at Plantio la Orquidea had a lovely display of Vandas that really were calling to me. I need a nice red one like these:
Thumb of 2016-01-03/dyzzypyxxy/d01eba Thumb of 2016-01-03/dyzzypyxxy/77f609

They also had this fascinating cross of B. nodosa and L. tenebrosa with flowers nearly 6in. across and such lovely soft shades. The show prices on these really held me back, and I'll wait until they have another open house to get them at a discount. So spoiled from our Apopka trips!

Phelps Orchids and Odoms were also there with fabulous Catts in bloom, and this year there were some really lovely little Tolumnias again, which I haven't seen for the last couple of shows.
Thumb of 2016-01-03/dyzzypyxxy/cd11a7

Jim Krull of Krull-Smith had his lovely Catts there, too but Whew! were they ever pricey - at least double what we were getting them for last month at his greenhouse. Guess he has to pay for the show fees and travel somehow . ..

Not sure why, but this dusky purple Vanda really caught my eye. Maybe the multiple fabulous spikes . . . and I liked the sensible name.

I know, all of you in FL get great deals on a huge array of orchids, but just because I don't have a way of knowing, what would you consider a "pricey"/"boy, was that expensive" Cattleya and Vanda?

Vandas in bloom were in the range of $45 to $65 and a nice Cattleya in bloom was at least $35.

Even the tiny little Tolumnias in a 2in. thumb pot were $15 to $20.

There's a lot to be said for buying a big Vanda in bloom, in the way of instant gratification. But when we can get big, healthy plants not in bloom for $14 each in Apopka, I'm certainly more inclined to take my chances and buy 3 or 4 there than one at a show.

KRULL-smith did have some small Pot.s in bloom for $15... But yeah, after Apopka $35. For a blooming Catt. Is expensive...I definitely would like to go see Palmer Orchids in person..they did have a great variety of good looking plants.

Out of curiosity, do any of these growers ever run specials on their web sites? Or do they even have web sites?

I think most of them have websites, Carol, and I've looked at a few including Krull-Smith and Odom's Orchids. The shipping costs make buying orchids from them prohibitive for me, generally.

My kids buy me gift orchids sometimes, and I'm on an e-mail list for Carter & Holmes in SC where I've bought a few plants. Most were very small, and not a great value for what you get. But I did get my Thunderstorm orchid from them, and another really great Onc. that has bloomed and bloomed.

Unless I am really after something special, I tend to look for value. Therefore, I buy most of my orchids in Apopka, or at Tropiflora during one of their sales, or from my orchid club. You just can't beat those prices and the selection is good too.

Yes! We've both done well with bare-root divisions lately from Tropiflora/Plantio at their sales. Very reasonable prices in the $12 to $15 range for big divisions with lots of fat roots.

A few months ago I bought some Cordylines from a grower in HI and the shipping cost was lower than if I had bought them right here in SC. I believe it was $12 and the plants came by Fed Ex air. It seems that because most products are flown into HI and there are so few exports, the planes were returning to the mainland empty. Some growers on the Big Island got together and made a deal with Fed Ex. I have not looked for orchids there but it is worth a try.

In my past life... ALL my plants came from HI.. All I could get locally were Phals and bag babies from Lowes. I am paying about the same price buying locally now $15-35 that I did then including the shipping.. And there's usually a whole different assortment of plants to choose from. I used H& R and Kawamoto.

Practically all my orchids come from HI, but I can't say the shipping is inexpensive. But I am buying a lot of plants at a time.

It mentions the Fed Ex deal somewhere on the site, I wonder who the other growers are in the shipping group with him.
