This cactus has dark spines and doesn't have the normal golden barrel flowers. There are 2 other photos in the database that are similar. Can someone check these ID's?

Added the photo due to the similarity/exact type of photo that Treehugger put up.
Assumed since that one was there in the Golden Barrel that mine was correct also.
I also put it up because none had blooms and my photo did. I thought it was a really pretty addition to what was up.

If it isn't correct I do apologize.

I agree that this is unlikely to be E. grusonii. Don't feel bad, Agavegirl1, we all make mistakes from time to time and this will be corrected in time, and then we will ALL know more than we did

@JRsbugs is usually really good at identifying plants!

@AgaveGirl1, yes, don't feel bad. We all mistakes, but the important thing is that the database is corrected. I just did the same thing yesterday with one of my plant submissions. I love that latest Saguaro pic you posted!

Baja_Costernero is super at it!

I can't say for sure, but it seems to be Eriosyce curvispina var. robusta. Some cacti are quite variable, it's difficult to tell if there are tubercules but from the top view it looks like there could be. I can't see the pistil protruding from the middle of the stamens as seen on the following link, not sure if they are covered by the boss of stamens.

I really dunno
It is my neighbor's plant so I go by what she tells me. She is 85 and sharp as a tack and the only person that's ever lived there. She had the plant put in and the plant has been there over 20 years. Could the spines be dark from age?

I'm inclined to agree it isn't a Golden Barrel the more I look at what's in a variety of plant files BUT Eriosyce looks more likely. If it is an Eriosyce it may be a hybrid of some sort. I'll post a few more pics here for you guys and maybe you can get a better idea and I.D. it more accurately. Maybe all of these photos will help?

If you want more pictures I can get some close up specifically of the spines for you. I just have to walk next door.

Whatever it is though, it is a really nice specimen and a very pretty plant.

Did you scroll down to look at the other photos Hetty? The spines are the correct shape, look at other Eriosyce sp. and you will see they look different. The spines do age, look at the one in the wild which is in Chile.

Spines: Short but very strong and thick, stiff greyish-brown spines whit darker tip, young spines are brownish while older one became greyish

Thanks for the extra photos Agavegirl, they do show small tubercules. It could be a hybrid. Also, a mature plant will look different to a young one.

Are we decided this is a Eriosyce hybrid of some sort?
I think it would be cool to have it added to the files especially since it seems so 'unusual' to me.
Either way, like Dutchlady1 said, it is a beauty and I wish it were mine!

I found photos of a mature plant which is said to be at least 25cm in diameter (around 10"). You can see the squashed together tubercules. It doesn't show the larger middle spines, although the plants on the cactus-art size do. The forming fruits look about right, maybe a little more squat and with fluffy bits instead of the arc shapes. They do vary.

Eriosyce curvispina is an accepted name, where the varieties are synonyms. In other words, they are considered to be all the same species.

Didn't mean to cause this much aggravation.
For what it's worth...NOT DISPUTING anyone's expertise or knowledge...a person who may be able to chime in another expert opinion is Baja_Costero. He is zone 11 in Baja Mexico and worked in a botanical garden there.

We've been 'plant pals' for a long time on a different forum. I followed him here for that reason. NOT MUTINY!

His subscription was up in January and he helped me run one of the longest forums on cacti, agaves, aloes and succulents there. He is pretty much a master at i.d.'ing plants just like you guys are. (I've seen photos of his collection Uhm...I don't think I'd have a spouse if I owned as much as this guy does)

So maybe tree mail him and ask him to weigh in and see if he has an opinion and possibly a tie-breaking identification verdict?

Just a suggestion. Again not questioning anyone's ability.

No problem Agavegirl, we here are more concerned about finding the correct name. Mutiny isn't in our vocabulary. Cacti can be difficult.

I looked at the Ferocactus wislizeni. It looks about the closest so far in terms of flowers, flower buds and seed pods.

I'll have to take a better look at the spines around the top. Maybe I can post a pic now that the cactus is not flowering and the pods are pretty much gone so we could see the growth pattern better at the top. That could be helpful?

mutiny is not my intention. Please don't misunderstand.
Over 30 years long I had run a cactus nursery in Germany. Visited Mexico and USA several times to study the plants in their environment. Had thousands of F. wislizenii seedlings in my nursery. And big plants as well, grown up in southern European countries. And in my opinion the depicted plant really looks closest to that species. Therefore i chimed in that discussion.
