Review: "And I Shall Have Some Peace There," a Book by Margaret Roach

By Sharon
May 18, 2012

Right up front I'll tell you this book is not a 'how-to' gardening book. It is, however, a book that might very well mirror every thought and fear that most of us gardeners have faced at one time or another. Let's take a look at a surprisingly fun, totally inspiring, and very personal glimpse into the soul of a New York businesswoman turned full-time gardener.

I guess it's pretty obvious I liked the book. Smiling
It really is interesting and fun to read. She's casual and intense all at the same time and you never know when the humor will creep in.

Thanks Lynn.

You know, Judy, until the subject of the book came up, I'd never even noticed her, except as 'just another gardening blog'. Oh boy, I was so wrong. I've spent the past few weeks stuck in this book and alternately hopping and skipping all over her blog. I feel like I've found a treasure chest with a real honest-to-goodness beautiful live person opening it up to me.

Go read that book!! It's a treasure too. Thumbs up

You are right, Vic, on all counts. And I nearly cried when we lost Tasha Tudor.

I think you'll like the book, put reading it on your list of 'must do' things.

I cried like a baby when Tasha Tudor died. I always wanted to go spend time with her in her gardens. How cool would that have been!

I will definitely read Margaret's book. Thumbs up

You can get it on Amazon, Shannon, here's a link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0446556092/

I love Nicholas Sparks too, but this isn't a book like his. It's an autobiography composed of little vignettes of her life and her relationships with people, nature, animals, plants - as she makes the transition from Saks Fifth Avenue to a quiet little cottage in the woods. Good book!

Me too, Vic, about spending time in her gardens.

Oops, Shannon, you said N. Evans and I mentioned N. Sparks. Same thing though!

We're going to be doing an audio interview with Margaret in July, so look forward to that!

If there are specific questions you'd like to ask her, let us know in tree-mail, and I'll add it to the list. Thumbs up

Did I mention that it's funny, too? Moments of laugh out loud for sure.

But it's also poignant, introspective.
You just have to read it for yourself, I think. And probably we each take away from it something different.

'Welcome, Becky! Smiling

Thanks for not speed-reading, tee hee, and for the very kind words. There have been bumps and surprises along the road so far, but even on the most challenging days I am grateful for the view out the window, and the chance to connect with the garden and its complex community of incredible inhabitants. I never fail to be entertained, and amazed. Now out to mow before a workshop full of container-gardening students arrives!

Hi Margaret,

I never speed read when words capture me and yours did.

What a great way to spend a beautiful day, not on the mower but doing a container workshop! I'll bet you enjoy it as much as your students do. Thanks for popping in here and thanks for a truly good book.

I finally got my book from the library. I am so glad you mentioned it Sharon, I am really enjoying it.
I am glad I am off all weekend, there is not much else I am going to do but read it!
This is definitely a book I will take away something from.
Thank you again.

Happy for you, Sherri. And I think you'll grab more than one 'something' from it.
Every time I pick it up even now, I find something new.
