Hmmm... I wonder if some pieces of glass might be positioned in a way that focuses sunlight and overheats the soil.

I think only if you're using magnifying pieces - which isn't a bad idea! (no overheating allowed though!)

I have a birdcage I would like to fill with succulents, like you did. Can you tell me what medium you put in the cage in which to plant?

I don't see that LJA is still posting here? Sounds like she used regular potting soil. You could use a good quality potting soil with pumice/perlite added?

Lynn, Thank you for doing that first...I've been tempted so long to do the quote thing but thought LJA might just come on...to post.

I notice that it was June of last year since she posted. But she did give us quite a bit of information on how she did it.

I have been checking the thrift store for a bird cage since I saw this. I have two birds and no old bird cages. I bet they are wondering why I keep eying up their cages when they are not inside the cage.

Their cages are to big though because I have parrots. I would love to do one of these and put some birds inside and hanging on the outside of the cage.

I have a wire tea pot I am going to plant up this week. Pics soon to come.

Your birds would sure have a ball with the plantings if you did their cages.

Hi all! I did not realize this planting had caused such an interest! Through pintrest an facebook it has gone around the world. Never thought my humble little project would attract such attention.
Here is a close-up of the bottom basket. It is a basket made of green hardware cloth bent to fit the bottom of the small cage. This was taken this spring before I tucked in more moss and refreshed some of the plants. I had left it out in the weather all winter and it was getting a bit shaggy. I usually water it lightly and if it gets very dry I submerge it carefully in a pan of water for an hour or so.

To Lois with birdcage posting: can you tell me what type of succulents you used? I really like the combination of textures and colors.

Hi maisyhoo. Nice to meet you.

Looks like Lois used a combination of sempervivum, sedum, graptos and echeveria.
Some are winter hardy and some are not. Great combination of colors, shapes and textures.

Don't forget the senecio (string of pearls) and looks like there's a pachyphytum?... (pink ones inside the cage).

I have been going through that link and other links in that one. WOW, it was wonderful Jo Ann, thanks for posting it.
When I get home I will go again and look at some of the things that were done, to get ideas on how I can put some of my tender succulents into one container.

The tender succulents are fun to arrange because of their various shapes, sizes and color. You will have fun Lynn when you do yours!
