We currently have two genera as noted. I can't find genus Gladiola noted in any of the taxon databases while Gladiolus is noted in them all. Is Gladiola the common name for genus Gladiolus??

Edit: Wrong link for genus Gladiola: http://allthingsplants.com/plants/browse/plants/genus/gladio...

Here are the two side by side. Makes it pretty obvious.

And why is it spelled "Gladioluss" on this page?

I don't know the status on Gladiola or why we have it. As for the misspelling on the gladiolus database, I fixed that. Smiling

I don't see genus Gladiola in other DB's though. Is this a magi-scriptable fix if genus Gladiola turns out to be wrong?

Yes, it sure is. Just give me the specific instruction you want me to do and I'll script it. I would have done it before but I don't know exactly the right course of action.

Gladiola is sometimes used as the plural form of Gladiolus (when Gladiolus is used as a common name), but I don't think there is any basis for listing it as a scientific name.

I agree. I've never seen the term "Gladiola" used except informally, and generally as a plural "Gladiolas."

I agree No such genus as Gladiola. And seems to be used only in US Whistling

So the ultimate goal is to keep genus Gladiolus and eliminate genus Gladiola from the database.
Currently there are no entries for Gladiola or Gladiolus in the Duplicate plant list.

Dave can you,

1. Change all entries with genus name Gladiola to genus name Gladiolus.
while
2. Preventing the creation of duplicates.
then
3. Delete any remaining entries with genus name Gladiola.

It looks to me as though plants are still being added as "Gladiola," such as this one, which probably also has a misspelled cultivar name (Could it really be "Surpreme"?):

http://allthingsplants.com/plants/search/text.php?q=gladiola...

On June 23rd, dozens were added, as you can see from this listing of recent plants added (if you have the same detente position as mine, they'll be visible at the bottom of page 3 and the top of page 4), and they're still in the database as "Gladiola":

http://allthingsplants.com/plants/browse/plants/recent/?offs...

Am I missing something here?

Nice catch,

edit:
Glitch maybe? Edit plant name- shows correct genus Gladiolus. Approve w/out change, displays properly.
ex. 'Alex the Great' (noted in genus change list above) Gladiolus (Gladiolus 'Alex the Great')

Yes, the plant was changed correctly but the display name wasn't updated for some reason. I'll go through and update all the display names right now and let's see if that finds them all.

Ok, I've updated the display names and that should have resolved the issue for sure. Thanks for your help! I tip my hat to you.
