Is this a coleus?

I found this plant growing in a container along with some coleus. Does any know if it is a coleus? Thumb of 2012-07-19/stilldew/bd6911
It's about 16" tall in the mixed container. Thumb of 2012-07-19/stilldew/1a578c

Probably, especially if it makes flowers soon. Mine all started a couple weeks ago. Is it your container?

I did a lot of image searching tonight and can't find any alternathera, perilla, iresine or plectranthus that really match it. I'm leaning towards plecthanthus. Going to go take a photo of the plant in the container one of these days and will watch to see if it blooms. The planter is outside a building near where I work. I stuck the cutting in soil and will try to get a little one to try rooting it in water. Looks very nice with the coleus. It has a little more thickness to the leaf than most coleus or perillas I've seen.

You are good! I think you're right too. I never even thought of a salvia because of the lack of flowers. Maybe someone deadhead it or it's a late bloomer? Will keep an eye on it and let you know.

Thanks!

I'm with Sherry, it looks like Salvia splendens 'Dancing Flames'. It's a short-day bloomer so you should start seeing blooms in late summer and fall. Salvias are usually pretty easy to root so be sure to make use of that nice cutting. Smiling

Thanks agin for the help. Here's a shot of the pot that it's growing in. I thinks it's really the star of the container.

Love that pot, good use of Scaveola! The exposure might help ID. No familiarity with the Salvia, but would expect to find it in full sun if it's like other Salvias. If it's a Perilla, it's got to be a pretty new one. The Perilla magilla I have takes about 3x as long as Coleus to make roots in water, which Coleus usually does within a week. Not had many Plectranthus, but I don't remember having any without a fairly strong scent (as I would also expect from a Salvia in my limited experience with them.) Any olfactory input on this plant?

Ideal conditions for the salvia splendens would be morning sun or dappled light. There are plecs with scent...such as plectranthus madagascariensis, aka 'Mint Leaf'.

Just occurred to me to wonder if the Salvia mentioned would be expected to be blooming now?

Cool, thanks! When I searched, all I saw were plants with blooms. I hope 'still' will post if flowers show up. Love a good mystery!

I checked the container a few days ago and the salvia was not blooming yet. Foliage looks great. My little cutting is showing no signs of roots yet. I may try to get a few more cutting right before the first frost.
