Same here...we did have a shower one night this past week for about 15 minutes...otherwise it always passes us by. Lots of watering bans and restrictions here in central Indiana. The area I live in is now in a severe drought and the corn crops will probably be a total loss for the farmers. WE pray our well doesn't go dry!

We're pretty miserable here in Wichita, Ks,. Some promising clouds blew in this morning, but they were only teasing. I don't know how many 100 degree days we've had so far this year......30? 40? too many, and the hot wind never stops either. It's hard to water anything in the wind.

Our biggest rains this summer were 0.5", and that was only twice. It has rained all around me time and time again, even 2 to 4" at a times in other areas of the city, but never in my area. I live west of Cincinnati, very close to parched southern Indiana. Therein lies the problem. High today 92°, and no rain in sight for the next 7-10 days.

I spent a little time working in the yard yesterday, pulling weeds and yanking fried plants. I've never seen the ground so dry in my 30 years in this house. No watering bans here yet, and I water constantly. I have watered tomatoes more than anything, watering deeply every day. Since getting our $404 quarterly water/ sewage bill last week, I've declared a moratorium on watering toms. Even with constant watering, the yield has decreased and tomatoes are a fraction of their normal size. I'm just going to let them fry.

We FINALLY got a little bit of rain this morning. The headline in today's paper says "Rain on its Way'. We're supposed to get between 2"-4" this weekend. Even without the rain, it's a relief to have overcast skies and cooler temps. I just may get some things planted!
The drought is the worst here since they started keeping records, back before we were the state of Kansas.
Crying Crying
Yikes!
I'm most nervous about how much the ground has dried out around my foundation. I'll find out this weekend if the basement leaks. We spent a fortune repairing the foundation last year. Judging by the cracks in the ground, and the way a few doors no longer close properly, I'm probably looking at more repairs. I've been watering the trees, trying to save them, when I should have been focusing on watering the foundation, keeping the ground from shifting. I had soaker hoses on one side of the house and I messed up by not putting them all around the house. Silly me, thinking I didn't need to water if I didn't have flowers there! oops. Big mistake. If it's not one thing, it's another...... Crying

No such luck here. Sad No rain, and hot sun, temps in the 90s.

But oh boy, if you can't open doors, not a good sign. Several homes on our block had similar conditions in recent years, with cracking foundations and shifting soil. They were around $3000 to $5000 to repair. I guess I shouldn't complain about my $400 water bill. But I have been watering the foundation pretty well, and regularly. All I do is move sprinklers all day. I have two running now, and most days too.

Yeah, we've spent many times that much on our foundation repair. I'm so tired of watering, and I can't seem to figure out a good plan for drip lines or sprinklers. The electric bill hasn't been too bad--around 325--and that covers the well pump, AC, house, barn, everything in this extreme heat.

Oh, my gosh, I never thought of the drought as affecting the foundation! Yikes! So sorry about your big repair bills, Cindy. Sad

I'm just totally sick of draggin' that dang heavy hose all over. I planted some new shrubs this year and they MUST be watered every day. (That's my rule for first growing season for shrubs and trees.) Lord, I'm tired. Crying

I live in a rural area in south central Wisconsin, and the drought has been bad here. Luckily we have gotten some rain mostly in small amounts since mid August. Not enough, but every little bit helpsm and 1/10 of an inch, is better than none.

I am very involved in the agricultural community, so I understand what this drought means to my friends and neighbors.

My flowers seem to thrive with rain. When I water, it keeps them alive, but they don't "thrive".

And for the silver lining - no mosquitoes. And the noise level in the neighborhood is down, because all the neighbors aren't outside cutting their grass. I just spot cut, and only when it needs it - perhaps about 6 times since June.

If that

But I hope that this winter (not that I want to drive through mountains of snow) and next year, resolve this drought. ~Jan

Jan, you're right about rain and plants - hose water keeps them alive, but it's rain that makes them really thrive! We've cut the grass maybe 5 times this year. Well, that's a plus!

I just returned from an 11 day trip. My lawnmower broke down right before I left, but I didn't worry about it because it looked like all the grass was dead from the drought and heat. Wouldn't you know, it rained while I was gone, and all the grass and weeds sprung to life! I had not informed my neighbors I was going anywhere since the trip was supposed to just be 4 days. Thankfully, one of them brought my newspapers up to the door, and another mowed the area in the ditch. I have so many shrubs that they can't really see into the property, so the tall grass wasn't visible from the street.
Now I have to rush to find someone to repair the lawnmower. Maybe one of my neighbors will let me use their mowers since we all have the same kinds. I'm hesitant to ask, because I mow 10 acres on my property. A few years back, I let the mowing go too long because every day that i had free to mow, it rained. I ended up having to pay someone to use a baling mower, no kidding! Really don't want that to happen again.
My rain gauge says we got 1.5 inches of rain, and the pond is still low, so I think the rain must have been a slow steady one. Sad i missed that! Around here, rain usually is part of a loud violent thunderstortm, and comes down heavy and fast, then runs off without soaking in.
Some of my shrubs are greening up again, but the trees that I thought were dead are still dead.
