As long as he can't hear them bark, he disdains to notice their existence. It would be beneath his dignity!

Like falling off a chair is beneath his dignity. He can pretend that it didn't happen, or that he MEANT to do that, unless Becky laughs. Sometimes Becky can't smother all her laughter, and then he's really offended.

I would never laugh at him out loud, and often I rush to apologize when he does fall off. He's happy with that - it MUST have been Rick's fault.

That's only fair, because we both do blame him when anything gets lost or one of us does something the other doesn't like. We blame Toby.

My dogs get blamed for everything, and we laugh at them all day long. I've had a side ache from laughing for about 3 weeks now, since we got Jackson. Dogs couldn't care less. That is why I don't have a cat!

Julia, didn't you find that it really helped to get another dog after losing yours? I waited 4 years, and it was the longest 4 years of my life. I just couldn't see myself loving another dog properly after Bud died, and the pain was too great. We got Maggie, and it took so much of the pain away. I'm still kicking myself for waiting so long. I'll never do that again.

As a form breeder of collies, I would always tell folks that when deciding to being a new four legged into their life after a loss was not an act of replacing, as each four legged (just like us two legged) can never be replaced. You are just opening your heart to love again and to be reminded of the wonderful times you had with the one that is gone, but enjoying what the new member does in your family. So don't kick yourself anymore, just be happy to have a new companion that will bring back memories of the joys of the one that has crossed the bridge.
Blessings to you,
Jan

Jan, we've had Maggie for 11 years now, so she has filled the gap, and more. They are like our kids. There is no replacing them. I was just too broken-hearted to get another dog after Bud died from cancer. He was everything to me. And now, the other three are everything to me. Well, not Bailey. She's a pain. But I love her. Hilarious!

Jan you are right about not replacing, never could do that. Each dog has a unique personality. 5 years for me and my youngest son asked if we could give Mack a home. I still was not sure about another dog but, here we are years later and 2 dogs. Boys are gone and the dogs and I are here. They are so much company.

My dogs never live in our run either. In the house or go in the car or, stay at the dog camp if we go for the weekend.
