I have always dead headed plants as much as i can.Does anyone else dead head their purslane to get more flowers? I was dead heading one of mine and noticed some i had only removed the bloom in the past and others i had removed the bloom and the (don't know what to call it) but the green thing that the bloom emerges from. Some of the ones left had dried and i could see the black seeds in it.Can you leave some of the blooms on until the dry out and then remove the seeds or will it reseed itself?

What about dead heading portulaca will that cause any problems with the plant reseeding and coming back the next year?

I can't speak for purslane because I've never successfully over-wintered it or been able to harvest seeds.

As for portulaca, I do cut mine back when it gets leggy but leave some blooms to re-seed and it re-seeds very successfully.

Thank you Vickie,

I noticed your in N.C.and i am in Ga. not far from Augusta, about when does your Portulaca die back for the winter and how long does your purslane last in it's HB's?I have MS and most of my funds are used for medical bills,so i really try to buy plants that are either perennials or reseed.I have some Dianthus that i planted last summer & they bloomed all spring, summer, fall, all winter and are still blooming!! The only break they took was a few times when the seasons changed they would only have maybe 2 or 3 blooms. It's not a large clump of them, they are the ones that don't grow tall, just kind of grow in a clump. If i gave them more attention they may look better.THE POINT sorry i ramble, wonder if i planted them and the winter is a light one,it may not bloom like the Dianthus but maybe not die back or come back,Or are these plants that they live in hot sunny weather and that's it and I'm just hoping really big heehee Rolling on the floor laughing

Those are all purslane.

My portulaca will bloom until first frost. Same with purslane. I have brought the purslane in before first frost in years past but it has never over wintered for me. Crying

I tried purslane from seed this year but it didn't germinate Thumbs down so I don't have any purslane this year. I buy it as a plant from Lowes.

I never dead head my purslane or portulaca.
One winter I brought in my favorite hot pink purslane in and placed it in a sunny window. It bloomed a little in January but soon becmae dormant. I watered occasionally and then placed it in the ground in April. It took off!
