That's pretty. I had that one in a pot for 2 years. This spring I planted it in the gareden, sure hope it is hardy. I took cuttings just in case.

I have a couple of large ones planted, one is about 7 ft tall and they always get frosted down but never fail to come back. I plan to take cuttings of my big one, they are usually pretty easy to root.

I found mine to be hardy here in the Willamette Valley. All are in pots that I put on the covered deck in the winter. I did have planted in the ground (Voodoo) that came back for several years. It died when we painted the house and it kept getting trampled. I was very sad to loose it. I still have Dennis, Bella Pink and Bella Coral.

I am so distraught Crying
Wanted to go out and take pictures today of what's still blooming and my camera is missing. I may have clipped it to my belt yesterday when I went to town but don't remember for sure. Searched the house & truck many times today so I must have lost it in one of the stores or a parking lot. Grumbling

All my summer hanging baskets are still in full bloom, their hiding under the tall front porch, and a planter with a bright orange begonia is continuing to shoot up big blooms. The star grass (tropical) is still putting on stars and new shoots. Frost has not got any of the annuals in the garden yet but they are all waterlogged and drooping badly, very ugly mess right now but just grew them all for seeds for next year. Drying seeds out now in the garage now.
We have an aster that was sold as a water garden plant from a nursery in spring of last year. When it got 4' tall it overwhelmed the tiny pond so took it out and set the pot in a bucket of water. It had not bloomed by November of last year so took it inside, bucket and all. Came 1st of December and still not blooming but was 6' tall. Put up Xmas tree next to it and it finally started blooming at Christmas. Many small white stars looked excellent next to tree, even put some lights on it. So this spring it left the pot and bucket and went into the ground. I hope it gets a chance to bloom before the frost but not looking like it.

Wow, what aster is it Tom?

I feel sick hearing about your missing camera. Hopefully it will turn up. Maybe some one turned it in to one of the stores?

Yes I certainly hope someone turns it in, called one store today and nothing, have to wait and call the other tomorrow.
Lynn, I'll dig around it in the morning to see if I can find the tag.
I do believe it may be for a bog but is doing well in soil also.
UPDATE: Got the flashlight and found the tag. Aster is about 5' tall now but this evenings wind has it all laid down, will need to stake it in the morning.
It is a Purple Marsh Aster although the blooms were almost cream color with a hint of purple last year. Maybe it needed some aluminum sulfate or another mineral to color it up.

Thanks Lynn but the description is not exactly right. 1 to 2 ft tall vs. 6' ft actual. Found out it was bought through Oregon Aquatics, Inc so I went there and looked up the the reference under Shallow water plants (marginal plants).
"Aster elliottii (purple marsh aster) Z5 Up to 6’. Small purple flowers in late summer to fall." 2010 Accepted name Symphyotrichum elliottii
It is native to the Florida Panhandle and appears to be aggressive. hmmm... I may want to put it back in a pot next year. Shrug!

Thanks for your help, you'll make a layman botanist out of me yet. If it does bloom I'll get pictures

Here's the ATP database entry for it. If you want to create an inventory list of your plants, you can click on the blue "Add this plant to your list" button on the right side. That way, you can find the entry fast from your list, add notes and photos. Thumbs up

Hi Tom, another Washington person. The aster sounds like a nice addition to the holiday decor. It was so warm here yesterday and the sun is out this AM. Good idea on the ice for plants for those that live in a warmer area.
