Are these only propagated from cuttings?--- or do you ever see seeds for sale for the scented geraniums?
Richters has plugs and plants, but I do not see seeds for these in any of the catalogues?

Carolyn, are you talking about pelargonium? If so, yes, seeds are available. I've never grown them from seeds, only cuttings.

Swallowtail has some.

I assume Carolyn was talking about pelargonium? I've never tried to grow them from seed, probably because they're so readily available for sale around here, the price is pretty reasonable, and they're already big plants.

Thanks!

I grow all my Pelargoniums and Geraniums from seed. They are very easy ..I just barely cover with potting mix and keep the soil temperature around 75 degrees using a heating pad .. once germinated and producing true leaves they get weaned off the heat and moved to the greenhouse until Spring. Here is Raspberry Ripple and Orange Ice - both grown from seed.

I've grown the red Black Velvet ones from seed with no trouble. They grow pretty quickly once they get started, too. And I've harvested seed from them as well. The second generation doesn't seem to have the dark coloration on the leaves, and I got some pretty pink ones from those seeds. Smiling

I have grown Pelargoniums for many years such as Pinto, Maverick and Orbit. They are easy to grow from seed. I get mine from different sources, Summerhill, stokes and Horticultural products and services, just to name a few. Most seeds sources offer these. However, I have never seen the sented ones offered from seed, only plants from cuttings. I'm not sure why. Same with the fancy leaves like Mrs Cox, Platinum, Happy Thought Pink or red.
In 2010 I bought from Hobbs Farm and greenery [email protected] a selection of the fancy leaves. Here they are in the green house and I'm taking cuttings for next year.
Sorry Caroline but I don't know any source for Canada.

Supposedly, the scented ones won't necessarily come true from seed. However, the person making that claim (heh heh, someone in the plant selling biz Whistling ) also said the seeds were fine like dust, which certainly isn't true of the seeds I've collected from my plants! But that probably is true anyway. Like I said, my red flowered plants gave me seeds that produced some pink flowers as well as red ones.

It seems that marketers give different views of plants than other geniuine gardeners do.
Swallowtail has a "chocolate mint " one as seeds. Mint is the scent and chocolate refers to the brown markings on leaves.
I have grown geraniums (pelargoniums) from seeds, so was thinking of trying some scented ones.

I have not bothered with sowing seeds of any of the pels, though I may in the future. In my climate, however, I get self sown Apple Scented Geranium, Coconut Scented Geranium, Mabel Grey Scented Geranium and large stands of a large neon salmon colored pel. I suspect that if I were growing more varieties, I would have lots more seedlings.....

So they grow well in sunny California.
Here I start pel seeds under lights, and early in the New Year.
I have found the odd seedling outside in containers where I had been growing pels.

Forgot...I also get a lot of volunteers from my Oakleaf Geranium. Yeah, this is geranium heaven. I keep some of the apple scented in my shadehouse and it seeds quite a bit into other pots...very convenient. I think as a lot of the heavy, big time gardening has become more diffidult with aging conditions that I may focus more on potted items, pels in particular.

I have brought a number into the house and repotted them into 9 cm peat pots.
I keep them alive over winter, and will put them back into large planters in the spring.
I do less digging in the ground as the years go by.
