Its December and I'm seeing mushrooms everywhere...but nothing like these beauties, 6 or more inches across and vibrantly colored...don't know what they are, can't imagine they're that rare. I did think they were fake at first Smiling

Aren't these crazy! I've sent an email to a couple 'mycologist' friends of mine to get an ID. It hasn't felt quite that wet here this year, but maybe it has (for mushrooms to be growing so numerously) maybe its the mix of wet days and then warmer dry days

I saw my first msuhroom in this yard after around 4 years. Just one modest light brown umbrella shape growing in the oldest end of my compost heap.

Yours have a lot more character and color than mine.

Yours look like they're celebrating the passage of Prop. 502!

We get mushrooms here, but they're just your run of the mill 'shrooms. Those, however...I think I'd be tempted to go out at night with a flashlight, sneak up and see who or what may visit them, or dance around them...

I envy those who are knowledgeable enough to go harvesting wild 'shrooms. when we lived in Washington, there was a lot of 'shroom hunting, when we lived in Iowa there was a lot and when we lived in NorCal, we had an old gypsy lady neighbor who would go gather 'shrooms in the hill pastures by us. I would never be tempted to collect my own...and I know I'd never eat one of those beauties you have there....lol..

In my youth I worked at the University of Washington and had occasion to meet/work with Dr. Art Kruckeberg (a local botanist who has authored several books and has a native garden he opens up to the public a couple times a year, very very nice man). Anyway, back about 40 years, he had a giant oversized notebook of photo slides of native mushrooms. I was amazed at the sheer volume of them and at such diversity. I remember thinking at the time one would have to be very knowledgeable about fungi to safely ingest them. I'm OK with the morelles, but that's about it for my shroom gathering.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

I agree There are many types around here!! I have several friends who go out especially in the fall, according to them, once you know what to look for and you're out looking for that specific thing, its easy...I wouldn't trust myself until I really knew! Thumbs up
Sherry, I was walking by this yard, when I saw these, I'd walked by and had to turn around because they were so magical looking, and maybe can't tell from photos but the one group is almost in a "ring" Smiling

lol...I was going to respond to your salvias post with just that in mind....Becca and I think we could have a lot of fun and probably get into a lot of trouble. too. Considering Crescent City where I could go wild with my love of hydrangeas and maybe shrub fuchsias. we were ready to list the house then I had to have some surgery...we're working back up to the idea of listing agasin, so we'll see.
