Anyone have any luck growing this in full Sun here in Houston? Thinking of planting it around a red maple tree in my NE facing front yard. Wonder if you guys have any opinions of this, and if it would be worth the money to spend on them. Springhill's has their latest mag showing them at full maturity, they are so nice looking. Read about them elsewhere, and they are able to take full Sun, not sure if they would be able to take OUR full Sun without scorching to death. I suppose the only spot that would get all day full Sun would be the East side though. Oh, and if I were to purchase, would I plant them nearest the edge of the grass, furtherest away from the tree, or closer? Seeing how they spread 18-36"? Thanks for any ideas you can offer me!!

You may have better luck than I did here in Austin, but mine melted away in the summer heat. They are beautiful, but just not suited to our hot summers. I tried them about five (?) years ago. It was an expensive experiment.

I find Full Sun plants differ than Full Heat plants. Full sun in Seattle is way weaker than the full strong sun in Houston. Is there a zone recommended for this plant?

They are zones 4 to 8, I'm in 8B. I went ahead and purchased some, I placed them with new soil under my Red Maple back in May. Then just recently, I purchased some caladiums to go between, as the Hakones were quite small, they were in tiny 4" pots. I noticed when I went to dig my holes for the caladiums, that "the soil" I had placed earlier, had become very fibrous, tiny root like fibers everywhere? Is this from the Red Maple you think?

I hope your hakone grows. Please let us know the progress. I see your original post was in Janauary. I take it hakone is doing great?? Are they larger than the 4" pot it came in?? I am in Houston/ 9A. I would love to try it but I trust the zone category and fear I would just be disappointed. The tiny roots might belong to your Red Maple. I have tiny tree roots everywhere! They suck up all my water.

Well nope they didn't do worth a flip! But there are still some components to the plant ~ somewhat...we'll see if anything comes back from it. Not sure if the tiny fiberous roots choked everything out last summer or what! Hoping my red maple gives them some shade...and maybe, just maybe I'll get lucky??? I'll let yall know what comes of them. Thanks for the replies!!

Wow! Talking about an old thread...I'm assuming the hakone couldn't survive in Houston? Believe the heat will kills it..

Not many plants survived our summer here in Houston, the heat without any rain nor any humidity took a toll on a lot of things. Tiny roots are from any plant searching out shallow water...2023 was brutal.
