I'm wondering if anyone has planted Kniphofia (Red Hot Pokers) in containers and had success.

This past Fall, I planted 'Nancy's Red' in a 20" container, along with a Coneflower in the same pot. I have it at the end of our side entry driveway that gets full sun. It even put up one late bloom! Hurray!

I'm wondering if it is ok, then I can do it with other Red Hot Pokers.

Comments welcomed. Thumbs up

The pokers I HAD were huge and spread easily. They put down a big root as I remember. I have no idea if the roots might get too cold in a container.

My pokers were larger than Nancy Red.Maybe your dwarf would be OK.

Thanks Jo Ann! I tip my hat to you. Thumbs up

It was late into the Fall and I didn't have the time to dig into the ground, so I thought it might be a good idea, then I got to thinking about it. If it works out ok, Might just plant another small Red Hot Poker in another container.

My Red Hot Poker is a cultivar that gets 5 feet tall. Green Grin!

It says it is suitable for a three gallon container?

I inherited some with the house. They were awful to dig out but transplanted easily to somewhere else.Mine were 3-4 feet and really huge at the bottom.
I just love this pix

speaking of Kniphofia. Does any one have the green/yellow one. I forgot its name and will it grow in zone 5? Would love to trade for some this year.

See if this website has it, I saw a green/yellow called 'Little Maid' and another called 'Percy's Pride'. look and see if that is the one you are talking about. Percy's Pride is beautiful. Green Grin!

Thank you. I checked out the website and Percy's Pride does not look like the one I saw a few years ago. The other Little Maid is not suggested for my zone, which is zone 5a. I wil try and keep looking, was hoping someone on this site grew it.

Jo Ann,

Nice pic! I tip my hat to you.

Susan,

I don't think the Red Hot Poker you were talking about would fit into a 3 gallon container. Can't believe it was stated like that! Blinking

Doglover,

You might have to do a google search for Kniphofia. I can't think of the one you were talking about.

The container thing was in our own database. Ridiculous, for a plant that is five feet wide to be in any container, I think. Blinking
I am so glad I went back to look at those Kniphofia's, I was browsing and found the solomons seal I have been looking for!! Yippee!! Hurray!
I also am going to get two geraniums for my zone, I goofed last year and bought the wrong ones. They were not hardy. Rolling my eyes.

Virginiarose.I believe the knipfoia Nancys Red is the container variety that was asked about. Its a smaller version and only 2 feet high.I doubt the spread is five feet.
This link recommends it for containers.

That's good to know, I did not look that one up in the database but the 'Lola' is listed as suitable for a 5 gallon container. I think I will submit a proposal to change that. I was just referring to the one I have.

I agree.I think my NOID was Lola .
It had a really wide skirt and one spring when I was cutting back dead growth I found the vole condominium where the kritters had nested and dinned on lily bulbs that were next to it.I found 1 huge bulb dragged into the nest with scales around it.

I cant imagine it in a 20 inch pot for long and good luck getting it out.The roots go on forever.

That's funny because I just read an article by a woman who had baby rabbits under hers. She was trying to dig it up because the blooms are not what they say they are nor is the color. The article was called 'Something not to grow'! She said it only bloomed for 3 days and took up 4 or 5 square feet of yard space. Something for me to consider because I have limited space here in the city. However I will wait and see, I am hoping for the best because mine will get a lot of sun.

Yeah, I hope it does ok, but I do not feel like it is a native plant. I never see any around here and that should have been a warning to me. It is too much work to grow something non native. I will wait and see how it does, it is not bothering anything right now. I just don't want it to get huge if it is not going to perform well.
