Masonry Ladders for Climbing Plants

By Xeramtheum
January 25, 2013

I think my all time favorite plants are vines and climbers. My biggest problem has been giving them something to climb on. For years I was using those flimsy arches you get at a Dollar Store which would snap if you looked at them wrong; so last winter I was determined to find something sturdier.

You're welcome! They really are awesome and I keep coming up with more ways to use them!

Fantastic!

I'd been trying to come up with just such a solution for quite some time. Hog panels are sometimes just too big for a smaller area and can be difficult for one person to work with.

Thanks so much for sharing! I tip my hat to you.

Yippeee! I've got 11 clematis plants in pots that will be more than ready to plant out this spring... and I didn't know where I was going to find the time to make trellises or, rather, arches (have to be free-standing, as there's no fence anywhere near that bed). I've got plenty of those metal T posts for chicken wire, and I think I even have a spool of wire about the right gauge for assembly!

You are AWESOME. Thanks for sharing this clever tip! Now I can take my time making "pretty" arches & obelisks, and meanwhile the clematis vines can do their thing.

I agree Such an awesome idea! I just start making a list of things I will need and this tops it;. You know veggies like beans, etc. would be great on these. Maybe I will try green beans this year.

Jill, is little Miss Sunshine going to be your helper?

What a cool idea. Thank you so much. I have a couple of clematis that need to be planted this year. This just solved my problem of where to put them so they had something to climb. No I can put them anywhere with this easy to do arch/trellis idea. Thumbs up

Wow! As soon as I can find my keys, I'm heading to Home Depot!
I have several climbing roses waiting to be planted. I saw a beautiful display at Longwood in Pennsylvania with trellises that looked like giant M's. I have been trying to figure out what material to use to make such a thing, and you solved the problem! It would be fun to grow climbing beans on the same trellis.
Thank you so much for posting your find! Hurray! Hurray!

Remember, you have to pound a stake into the ground and wire them to it .. I'm thinking that something as heavy as a climbing rose you might want to have 2 posts per side and perhaps one in the middle for support if you are going to be making an arch.

xeramtheum, I also submitted a gardening idea a while ago for a trellis option. Not the same as yours, just another option. I will check if our Home Depot sells the masonry ladders. I have a vigorous rose that grew taller than my house and I need to do something

You bet Sunshine Girl is my garden helper! She's always been great company out there, and at almost-4 this summer she'll be even more actual help, also. She knows a ton about planting & growing & picking & worms & butterflies & bugs & birds & ... LOL She'll tell you all about it, too! This does look like a project where I could really use her help with wiring the "ladder" to the posts.

I'm thinking that my little clems won't be much for covering these trellises right away, but I can put a clem on one side and then plant pole beans on the other, or plant something not too thuggish (like a Japanese Morning Glory) right with the clematis at the base of the trellis. I've got seeds for several different pole beans and runner beans this year, so we can really have fun with this!

3 1/2 in mid-Feb, so she'll be 4 next August. Some days she's "3 going on 13" and other days she's just definitely 3. LOL!

She loves to help with projects like this. As she says, we are a GOOD team. Lovey dubby
