An "other" check box under sun requirements?

Possible examples for usage:

-Performs best in full sun, but likes some afternoon shade-

-Full sun preferred, but requires consistently wet or moist soil-

-Performs best in full sun, but some high shade preferred in summer-

It would be helpful to be able to add these useful growing tips while filling in other *at a glance* data update information.

I've struggled with this for a while for the reasons you've mentioned Chelle. Even going to the best sellers sites basic exposure information never tells the whole story. Hopefully greater detail is available. The issue as I see it is so intertwined with local climate that a more than short blurb explanation is generally required. "Afternoon shade"? where is the grower located? This is why I try to remember to always add my hardiness zone and location when posting a comment.

Since your location and zone are already a part of your profile, maybe I should simply program the system to display that information alongside your name when your comments appear in the database.

I see your point, Evan. The information might be a bit too generalized for every grower's situation when it's listed as a data box item.

This would help with comments posted by members who have that information filled in on their profiles. Thumbs up

I've added the location to your comments in the database. I think it looks nice and is quite useful to have.

As for the drop down text box sun, I think information like that is better placed in a comment.

I've learned that when a Texan says "benefits from afternoon shade", that may be more true during a 100-degree summer at 38 North Latitude than during a 75-degree summer at 48 North Latitude.

I think that a Texan's idea of "part shade" is brighter than my idea of "full sun".

I used to think that gardening would be relatively simple: just grow stuff. Hah!

I visited the Dallas-Fort Worth area once, and it seemed like a sun-blasted oven. I don't even think it was the middle of the summer!

And that was before I moved to the PNW. I lived in NJ then, but the contrast was strong. Even more contrasting was how polite everyone was. People called people "sir" even when they didn't work for them!

And it seemed as if everyone was tall and blond in Texas. When I flew back in to Newark, it seemed like a mob of shorty, swarthy people all of whom were elbowing me aside.

Depends upon the angle subtended from the sun between where you are and the perpendicular. More acute, greater the heat. This heat has a bearing on plant growth but some confusion will again enter. Density, pollution, moisture, etc will modify what I wrote above. The angle may be more acute at the Equator then Dallas but the atmospheric layer at the Equator is higher, more dense, more polluted(more population cooking on wood) and more moist. Hence cooler.
Regards,
Arif.

In the PNW, at least really near the coast, fall winter and spring are cloudy, misty, overcast and drizzly. Ac tualy sunlight, bright enough to cast a shadow, is really really rare.

During the summer, when only tomatoes and pepper need extra heat, the sky is clear. (But the sun is still fairly lo0w in the sky, most of the day).
