One of my new bulbs this fall was supposed to be Comet, well it is does not look like the photo on the tag or the photos I found on line, I think it is Amico. I am really ticked about this, Amico is pretty but not what I paid for. It's a Florissa Co. bulb, purchased at Art Knapp's nursery.

I have never seen Comet. This might be Amico, it does look like mine. ID would be dependent on the size of the bloom. Amico is a Hadeco Sonatini: the flower should be under 12 cm across. If it is a larger flower, I don't have any photos that look quite like this one. Mislabelled bulbs are a unfortunate part of buying Amaryllis bulbs.

What is the correct way to measure the bloom of an Amaryllis? The Amico? is about the size of Red lion, which is considerably larger than 12 cm.

Put a ruler across the face of the bloom, tip of one petal to the tip of the opposite petal. It sounds as if it is too large to be Amico.

Yes it looks like it is too large, it's about 16 or more cm, hard to tell with the petals re-curved. Dang.... I thought I had an ID on it!

Barbara, how many amaryllis do you have? Seems like so many photos of the different cultivars I see are yours. Whistling

I have grown about 250 different cultivars. Of course that includes some duplicates: quite a few are the same one sold under more than one name. Now that I've been in this for a while I only order ones that are new to me. Occasionally substitutions remain unknowns. Just in case, I keep photos of my unknowns, hoping that someday, I will be able to ID them. A great example is H. germa. Ireceived a unknown bulb as a substitution for Lemon Sorbet. When the bulb bloomed, the flower form was not right for Lemon Sorbet, but I didn't have a clue what it could be. 3 years later, I compared my photo to a photo of H. germa, and sure enough I had a positive ID. That was real score, since H. germa is rarely seen for sale. Its blooms every year in my garden.

Wow, that's a lot of plants! Do you sell or trade them? I went through your photos today, you have a lot of beauties. Are they all planted outside? What are the best sites to try and ID my cultivar, except for size it sure looks like your Amico.

The first place to look is Emaryllis.com. It has good photos and a lot of information about cultivars. I also go to the Plantscope website, which is operated by a consortium of Dutch growers: There are no Hadeco cultivars on that site. The Hadeco website also has photos of their cultivars, but its limited to what they are selling this year. I plant all of mine outside after their first winter blooms. About half have survived and thrived. Another quarter have hung on for dear life. The remainer have gone on to the Amaryllis afterlife. Outside they are exposed to all sort of nasty bugs, slugs and pathogens so only the fittest survive. Since the tags have all faded out, each year I can be surprised by what blooms. I don't sell or trade them. I still think you should email Florissa Co with a photo. See if they recognize it. It may be something else they sold, and the bulbs got mixed up there or when they came from the grower. The worst they are going to do is ignore your email.

Thanks for the site info, soon as I get a some time later today I will take your suggestion and send Florissa the photos and see if I get an answer.

Do you get many blooms at once in your garden, must be a beautiful site to see if you do.

I took these side by side photos of Red Lion and the Noid this morning, Red Lion is on the second scape, and the noids scapes starting bloom about the same time, the flowers are just about spent.

Hurray! Thank you Lily, I just checked Emaryllis.com and it sure looks like it, size and description looks good. Much cheaper bulb than the Comet, very annoying. Glare

It seems these days mislabelled bulbs are an unfortunate part of buying ANY bulbs.

Brian, it really ticks me off when we pay a higher price for a bulb and then get a lesser quality one, I think it's a big rip off! Grumbling
