I am really getting Spring Fever. I have been pretty good and held off for the most part and

not purchased a lot. It seem to be pretty slow right now and it may be a good time to look. Next

month things may pick up. I have bid and won a few seeds in the last few days.


How about you? Do you buy mostly local, the LA, or directly from a hybridizer?

I do most of my bidding June and July, for seeds. If I plant later than that, they wont bloom the next year, so I go with is offered early. Problem with that is, that seems to be when the seeds are the most expensive. As the year moves on, and the auction is glutted with seeds, they are much cheaper.

Ive rarely buy a new one from the LA, unless its from the hybridyzer. Got tired of plants that were bought and divided and then resold before they could get a good settling in and increase. Every now and then, I see someone post an older one, and I will look for those on the LA. There are a couple sellers that I know send no less than 3 fans, even if they advertise 1, I will buy from them.

I also wont buy anything any more, unless Ive seen it in person or a few pictures from others gardens.

I have bought two plants from Fred, to be delivered in the spring, Im going to order some from the marietta co-op going on.

I have been very bad, I have been bidding all winter and I have bought way too many daylilies on LA and I know I will have a heart attack if they all come at the same time.

I do not really like bidding, but if I do I put the name into the 'search open items' to make sure someone else does not have it at a better price, plus you might consider other things like how soon do they want the money and what are your payment options. I prefer the 'buy it now items' and I love the search engine. Also I purchased from Maryott's and Floyd Cove. I got some very nice daylilies but no new intro's unless they give me one as a bonus. Hey!! It could happen.

I have been a very good girl so far this winter, I only have 1/2 a dozen things coming from the LA. I told myself I would not buy any so I think I'm doing reasonably well with only 6 so far. Last year I said I wasn't going to buy any and I had 30 coming by this time last winter Restraint is not my best thing I also buy from Maryott's and from Perfect Perennials( the Kendig's garden) which is about an hour from me. I go there every summer, they have a fab garden and beautiful plants in 3 gallon pots. Also Diane and Stu Kendig are just lovely people to chat daylily's with.

I don't usually buy seeds cause I make my own. I did buy 1 plant so far back in December. Will probably buy a few more in March.

We buy from the Lily Auction and tend to stay with those sellers that we have been pleased with, though I will occasionally take a chance on a new seller for an inexpensive daylily. We have had good experiences most of the time. I stay away from the sellers who have sent less than desirable plants. There are too many good sellers out there offering the same plants to settle for inferior fans. I also prefer a double fan or better as opposed to a SF, even though I will have to pay more. I agree with Pam in not wanting to buy a fan of a newer intro that is being resold before it has had time to get established. It takes twice as long to get established in our garden. We also buy from a few hybridizers buying a few new intros here and there. We usually get extra fans and plants that are well established plus a new intro as a bonus. I have found that we can get good buys from a hybridizer's general sale list. We also buy from daylily gardens which have websites or published sale lists that we have bought from previously. One in particular is Maryott with September delivery. We also attend local daylily club and regional meetings where we get good buys from the "bargain tables" and newer daylilies at the auctions. I have not made a count yet of how many we have coming in the spring, but it is fewer than in the past. Many are additional fans of daylilies that we already have and like (found at "too good to pass up" prices), so I do not have to find new planting spots for these. We have some fantastic daylilies coming and look forward to their blooms this June. One I am looking forward to is Senator Edward M. Kennedy (Doorakian) that is coming from Mary Collier Fisher in May. We will have to "baby it" as it will arrive to near 90 degree temperatures and have to endure a typical dry summer.

I try to stay off the LA, it is waaaaay to dangerous for me.

I also try to stay off the hybridizers websites, they are waaaaay to dangerous for me.

But I look at both way too often, and I use both equally.

LOL, the question perhaps should be, "When do you NOT bid on the Lily Auction?" This is a DANGEROUS time of year for daylily addicts. Those of us who live in more northern areas are itching to get outside and work, yet it's still a bit too cool or cold to do so. It is easy to get distracted. I get mad at myself but still bid occasionally ( knowing that there are at least 10 in pots that are over-wintering that still need a space) and that every new plant means something else has to leave! Mostly I order from hybridizers and have a few new ones coming this year from Tim Herrington, Bret Clement, Judy Davisson. But I weakened and bid on a couple from the Lily Auction too and ran into John Falck this fall and ordered 'Emma's Curls' after seeing what a great plant it was. I'm watching another one on the Auction right now.... time to click my ruby slippers three times and chant, "I will NOT bid on that, I will NOT bid on that....."

I would like to have 'Emma's Curls', too. I am trying to make myself wait a year to get this one, Don't know if this will happen though.

I read the title to mean when, during an auction, do you bid? If something's starting at a buck and I just want to bid on something I'll do it then but otherwise try to wait until auction end. I am so impulsive I try to watch for a couple of days to make sure it's something I really need too.

I've been a very, very bad girl this year and have about 70 new ones coming for spring. God my third box of the year last week. It was from Jamie G. The plants are dormant and small. They probably won't bloom this year but since we're so mild already I wanted to get them planted. He sent 3 bonuses including 2 of the new UF doubles. Woohoo.

When do I bid? Well not often anymore (at least for now) as when I get new something old has to go. When something really strikes my fancy I may bid. I was recently bidding on one that needs to be in my garden the bidding went quite high, so I found it from a daylily garden where I have purchased plants at a lower price that it was going for on the auction. Happy about that one!....Betty

I have sold one daylily years ago, and bought 3 or 4 in all the years the LA has been up. I don't really know why I have not been into it more.

I do try to buy from the hybridizer, to support their efforts. If they are sold out for more than a year or two, and I still want it, I will look elsewhere.

Thanks for everyone's response. I am not very good at just tracking a dl on the LA if it is one that I am wanting. I do try to do that and see if it goes out of my price range before I bid. I also try to put in my top bid and then not to up it. Tho I have been known to do that too.

It is so sunny today it is giving in Spring Fever in the worst way. Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!

I came home from Mom's to find a box of chocolates and a sweet card. We have plans to go to a dinner and movie tonite.

I try to buy in the spring and early summer. Fall shipments are tricky since they may not get enough time before a hard freeze.

Lately I haven't purchased anything though. Planning to move is one way to keep my LA habit in check!

Tho we have kicked around the idea of building a new house at the farm after DH retires. That would be a least 3 yrs away. Good Luck

I have found over the last two years that in December I had the best chance of winning bids without being outbid too often and the prices getting too high for me, and if I bid from the sellers who accept cash and checks only rather than those accepting PayPal my chances increased even more. Must have something to do with Christmas coming up, eh?

I have found the same time frame to be true as Betty. January is a slow month, too. People are still recovering from their Christmas spending. Also, people do not seem to be buying during the hot summer months of June and July for fall shipping and maybe fewer people buy for fall shipping.

Im pretty new to the whole thing.....but i did notice nov...dec....beginning of jan were the best times to buy on the LA....from what i have seen it is already picking up considerably....plants that have gone unsold all winter have lots of bids....Four eyes came and went several times for I think 70 or 80 dollars and now all of a sudden its getting bid outrageous again....i shouldve bid when i had the chance lol
