Just wanted to post a picture of the big winter honeysuckle we have in full bloom now. Lots of honey bees in there, and the fragrance is so wonderful. Really love this plant!

That is one huge plant - no wonder the fragrance is so great.

Do you happen to know the latin name?

Hi, Dianne, glad you liked the picture. I think this is a marvelous shrub, nothing seems to bother it, and the deer have never touched it. The latin name is--- hope I spell this correctly--Lonicera fragrantissima. If you have the room for something this big, I highly recommend it. I see you are Zone 9a and depending on the weather, could easily be evergreen in your climate. It is semi-evergreen for us through the winter.

Avedon - thanks for the information. Looks like its natural growth habit is going to be too big for my garden. Even though I have gotten rid of all my lawn, I have now filled 95% of the space and can only tuck small plants here and there.

You may be able to keep the size down by pruning, mine responds really well to pruning, I'd say it would be great for hedging if you don't mind a deciduous hedge.

Yes, they respond well to pruning and can be kept to a much smaller size that way.
I garden for the pollinators.

Bumping up my thread from years ago--wanted to post this year's picture of the honeysuckle. Our winter has been quite mild so far, so not a lot of leaf drop. The flowers are much more visible with a colder winter and fewer leaves on the bush. Nevertheless, it is wonderful to walk by both bushes with a south wind spreading the fragrance---lovely!!

P.S. The bushes are abuzz with lots of honeybees.

Back again in 2024. With some very cold--for us--temps and sleet and light snow, there was quite a bit of leaf drop so the flowers now show up very nicely. The fragrance is amazing, as always. Being outside and walking by the two bushes is "swoon time" for me. And, the honey bees must be in "bee heaven" when they are collecting pollen from the flowers.

Lonicera Fragrantissima
Unbelievable fragrance, my favorite.
Especially on misty days!
