I purchased an Amaryllis bulb from my local Lowes store quite awhile ago and planted it. it immediately started to grow. Now it is so tall that i have to use a kabob stick to keep the leaves from falling over. I have no idea why it has not produced any blooms yet. It still looks quite healthy as well. Do you think perhaps I purchased a dud? Any suggestions to get it to bloom?

If you bought it after season, it could have produced a bloom spike in the store and then died back before you bought it. You will probably have to wait until next season for blooms, though, if you're lucky you could possibly see flowers this summer or fall ...depending on how out of whack its internal clock is. The "natural" bloom season for most Hippeastrum cultivars is spring to early summer, and a few varieties will bloom a couple of times once they obtain a large enough size & age.

I had an amaryllis that I forced indoors to bloom starting in early Nov 2012 and it bloomed around Dec 2011 to Jan 2012, then I left it outdoors the whole of 2012. It just made its leafy growth. What I did was to hide it in our garage in February this year, and come March, I saw new growth. So I placed it back near our windows and as days progressed, it is now pushing up a new bud. Try giving it some rest, then maybe it will send you a new set of growth with buds.

Thank You!! I will do that as soon as I get home tonight. Should I put it in total darkness? Or just a less lit room? Should I water it during this time?

I placed mine in total darkness, did not water it. The only time it saw any light then was when our car goes in and out for the day. I only started re-watering when I placed it by the window. Hope it works for you.
