My "ghosty' has gotten so leggy and TALL they are falling over.I am wanting to restart them by cutting off the tops and rooting them.Hopefully they will come back fuller and can be left out side next winter.I thought i may pot them up in a coir HB.

My question is,i always let succulents sit out to callous over before i plant them. The stems on these are larger than any i've ever rooted before.Should i let them callous over completely or just begin to callous before putting them in a well draining potting medium? I also put cinnamon on the ends of everything i cut/gets broken,it's great at keeping fungus, mold etc... out of the cut end.Thumb of 2013-04-05/jojoe/32a266

I'm no expert by any means, but I just stick mine in dirt...they take for me. Also near where I pot stuff is a shed. I toss leaves and stems there...it is filling in nicely and the ghosties,so far, have come back for me in the spring. Yes I'm south of you, but we do get short hard freezes in winter.

I don't grow many succulents, so my experience is very limited.

I do let sedums callous for about a day before planting, with good results. Ditto pelargoniums.

Also extremely new to these kinds of plants but so far have had much better luck with individual leaves than stems. I might get a couple leaves going, then sever the stems, if you haven't done it yet. If you have, how's it going?

Update on 'Ghosty' I said on another thread i hadn't lost any plants so far because of the ungodly amount of rain we have had.I forgot about this plant,i haven't completely lost it yet?? Confused We have had so much rain that nothing has had time between showers, thunderstorms & down pours to even begin to dry out.We have had maybe 2 weeks without rain.My 'Ghosty' started rotting from soil up while still putting out higher up the stems.I cut the higher parts of the stems that weren't rotting & had the little tiny new growth on them & put them in dry soil. They began to root & when the soil got wet i put them on back porch, trying to keep them out in the heat & able to get sun when it came out.The temp hasn't went over the mid 80's but with the humidity so high the heat index has been staying around 115*F.So i have been fighting a battle.

My C. 'campfire' is under the porch & i'm constantly pinching off stems before they get mushy & it spreads to far.

If anyone wants some cuttings from a Capitella 'campfire' i have enough pieces to make a small plant,i pinch them off,let them dry & replant them or stick them in some vermiculite. Thumb of 2013-07-01/jojoe/b9f45f
This picture was taken before the constant rain started. It now isn't so full because i have had to keep trimming it to prevent the smaller stems from rotting. Will gladly share,i really don't want another one,it's the last plant to come in & the first to go out.It gets red & is so pretty when it's exposed to cold weather.

Oh man, it's the same way here! Either moving plants for a minute of sun when occasionally so lucky, or running back out to get them under the porch roof again. Some plants I'd put in the ground around the end of May and I keep having to find them because when it rains so hard, the leaf mulch in that bed (that I'd cleared from the entire little area when I originally planted the few succulents,) is floating up over them. At least 10" of rain here in the past couple weeks, the novelty of measuring it has washed away. Squirrels are sand-bagging tree trunks, I snorkeled to the mail box, we'll soon need nautical navigation flags for the rivers next to the roads.

Barely one lane of a 2-lane road trying to visit a friend in FL yesterday, just south of Geneva, AL. Glad I don't live on one of these!

The Chocktawhatchee river. The trees are NOT usually under water, there's usually white sandbars at the edges - heck, there's usually edges!
