I had the plant veggie crazies last year and I have the plant veggies crazies again this year. Well, the crazies is mostly planting tomatoes but I do plant peas, beans and cucumbers also. And I am actually really organised this year.

I got some bales of straw afew days ago to use as mulch and today I had two yards of compost delivered and spread over the veggie beds. I wanted to have the straw to put out as soon as the compost was on so that is what I did.

After putting the straw out I put in all the tomato cages. Now I just have to buy my tomato plant seedlings and I am good to go. Really just go around and wiggle a hole thru the mulch into the compost and pop in a plant.

The last of the tomato beds is in the front yard. Last year my tomatoes planted here off the front porch grew to 7 feet tall.

I will be planting beans (yardlong beans) and cucumbers as well as tomatoes but so far I only have peas planted. Mostly in pots though I do have some in ground. The ones in pots are doing better than the inground ones though.

Snow peas in pots.

Mona, my pepper plants were eaten up by slugs last year so I never did get any peppers. I only plant a few. last year had three. I will get some this year, maybe three again but this time plant them in the new tomato bed so that they will not get destroyed. I also plant brocoli, onion sets, lettuce and greens. I want to try an eggplant or two this year as I have never tried eggplant before. And I planted melons last year but started the seeds so late that I only got about 4 melons out of it.

That long bed featured in pic two (and other pictures) I expanded last August. I had 12 plants there last year in two rows of 6. Now it is 20 plants in two rows of ten. And the square bed used to be an iris garden. Last August I moved all the iris so I could make it a veggie bed. This spring I had to move some daffs out of it while they where in bloom. But it is deffinatly a veggie bed now.

Ha! my veggie farm is almost open for business. I went to my favorite nursery today and bought my veggie seedlings. Lots and lots of tomatoes which I will list in a bit.

But I also bought Zuchini and Eggplant. Never have grown them before. Bought a six pack of each because although I do not intend on planting six those six packs are cheaper than one of those larger single plants.
Thumb of 2013-04-24/Newyorkrita/84c557

Then got six packs of peppers and my favorite burpless cucumbers that I always buy there. The peppers are Cubanelle, a favorite of mine for stir fries.
Thumb of 2013-04-24/Newyorkrita/554f89

And a six pack each of Boston Lettuce and a brocolli.
Thumb of 2013-04-24/Newyorkrita/9be03c

Now to the tomatoes. I did buy afew of those single pots. I got one of each-
Viva Italia
Sungold
Suggery
Kelloggs Breakfast
Prudens Purple
Power Pops
Thumb of 2013-04-24/Newyorkrita/df80e7

Viva Italia. Sungold and Sugery all all returnees I had last year. Kellogs Breakfast and Purdens Purple are new for me heirlooms I want to try. Power pops looks like a cherry tomato, I bought it simply because it has lots of green tomatoes already set on the plant. Totally an impulse buy!

Now most of the tomatoes I bought in six packs and these are one six pack each-
Big Boy
Better Boy
Beefmaster
Early Girl
Juliet
Sweet Million
Rutgers
Jet Star
Big Beef
Thumb of 2013-04-24/Newyorkrita/209c0a

I have had the Sweet Million before but not for years. I remember them being a small tomato bigger than a cherry but very tasty.

Most of the above are returning favorites. But the Rutgers, Jet Star and Big Beef are new for me, never had them before.

Thats it, my tomatoe plants are alll bought, not getting any others. I did have seed this winter but never did get around to starting it. Maybe next year. But I am so excited to have my tomato plants.

Here are all my veggies unpacked from the car and set out here in the sunshine where I watered them-

I am so revved up at the idea of eating all those yummy fresh veggies. But as to the market, last year I was getting teased that I needed to put up a farm stand at the end of my driveway. I know I had plenty of tomatoes last year and this year have even more than last year.

Well, I get certain garden crazies. Last year had the tomato growing crazies really badly. Have them again this year! Hilarious!

So yesterday I planted my lettuce seedlings and in back of them I put some radish seeds.
Thumb of 2013-04-26/Newyorkrita/7ba4ce

I also planted my 6 pack of brocili seedlings. I had no room for them so they went in those old pots at the edge of the patio that have been there for years. Usually put impatients in them but there are no impatients this year anyway (wiped out by a blight). So now they have brocoli.

My onion sets I had planted in pots in the same rows weeks ago are doing great!

My chives are from last year. I was surprised to see them come up again this year.

Those Sugar Lace II snap peas are totally different.

The Snow peas are growing like crazy.

I checked back and last year I planted my tomato seedlings on May 3rd. This year I plan on getting them in ground this Monday so that will be April 29th. I seem to get earlier each year.

Oh I am so jealous!! I just love to eat those home grown tomatoes. And once the plants grow and set fruit I watch and watch and watch them for some ripe ones.

I have some small fruited varieties this year and they should be first on those fruits. I have Juliet, Sungold and Suggery all returning as I had those last year. Then I also bought Sweet Million which is called a cherry but really they are larger than than the average cherry and taste really good.

Big Grin I only have the one plant Rita and it is growing in a pot. It is now as tall as I am. Unfortunately, in our heat the larger varieties do not do real well, but cherries are pretty dependable. I was glad we beat the Cardinal to that little tomato. He loves them as well. Crying

LInda, have you ever tried Sungold? Small cherry tomatoes but the plant just makes so many of them. They taste terrific too. And the birds will not think they are ripe as it is a golden color, never does get red. You could get another pot and have two tomato plants.

Yes, I did try sungold a couple years ago but I really did not like the taste . It did grow well. I used to do several pots of tomatoes but I just needed to cut back some this year. Too many pots to care for ! Blinking

Oh boy, no cutting back here!

I used to have a really nice sized veggie plot up in the backyard where I have those big daylily and TB iris beds now. Where I show the pictures of the darwin tulips on other threads. Anyway, just had to have more daylilies so made it into a flower garden. But I was miserable without my tomato garden. So I gradually fixed up areas down in my sideyard for my veggie beds. Kept expanding them. I would expand more but I can't. No more room left.

Here is a picture from today. That area where the darwin row of tulips all the way over past where I show was my veggie plot and now a flower garden.
