anyone grow these?

I've got some seeds started, but no sprouts yet. This is my first attempt with this plant as well.

I'd thought this one might be a bit difficult, but it wasn't.

Interesting seeds...they're some of those that form a gooey gelatinous-type coating once they've soaked up enough moisture.

My seeds came already but I haven't had a chance to sow them. Since I will be out of town for four days after Saturday I thought it best to wait until I return to plant them. I already have to have someone water/watch my millions of seedlings so I figured it was enough!

if they grow as slow as a coleus.. it will take forever to get big.. don't think another week or two will matter.. if they are the same that is .. lets hope not though

I know. The coleus I started in Jan. is still tiny!!!! They have grown some, but not much. This cold spring is really stunting a lot of my seedlings!

yeah coleus seedlings do drag there feet for a long time.. but then take off

My seeds were wintersown on February 15, 2013 and sprouted yesterday. How were everyone's sprouts sown earlier? @ warm temps or wintersown?

It's always interesting to see a plant sprout from wintersowing in z7 that is categorized as a tropical or tender plant @ z9a-10b.

That's wild! I wouldn't have guessed that one could be winter sown! I did mine indoors with extra light, and just slightly above room temperature.

You'd be welcome indeed, but these seeds came from another generous member.

We can see the fuzzies on the leaves already.

I grow the plec barbatus and the variegated form also...they get very large here. I did have a large stand that I've now pulled out since I'm currently cutting back on beds to be watered and cared for. Interesting, I didn't think of growing them from seed, but once you've got them going, they root super easy in water.

Chelle, my seedling is at the same stage as yours in your picture. The more I learn about this plant, the more interesting it becomes - can't wait to see how it develops.

Gypsy - thank you about sharing how easily it roots in water. I was wondering, since it's related to coleus, if it might share that attribute. Long ago I had a neighbor who wintered her coleus and other summer annuals as cuttings in variously colored antique jars of water, tiny enough to sit on the sashes of her windows through winter. Her windows looked like jewel boxes. Anyhoo, I don't have room to winter a whole plant this large, but cuttings over winter I can do.

I've always grown mine in part shade, but I have a friend who has a large stand of barbatus growing in full sun here, really surprised me...they do quite well.

most of the other plectranthus I grew always over wintered great.. my neighbor had a nursery pot with a plant I gave her that prior spring.. we had that nasty snow storm last year.. power outage.. for 8 days .. it lived just fine in her unheated garage .. strong buggers for sure.. she went to florida in January.. came back in April.. the poor thing only had water gels and a tiny bit of light through the garage door... and it lived until she came home.. granted it looked leggy and hurting.. but she brought it back in the house and it looks great again.. totally impressive

and most root just like a coleus .. pop a piece off and stick in soil.. good to go.. the only one I found so far that was hard to root was Plectranthus parviflorus 'Sapphire Dream' .. it's hit & miss but I managed to get a few pieces to survive since last year
