Orchids
I got this tuesday morning in 2 large boxes .Had it up and done by midnight that day. A very Long day and still got a bag of screws I have no clue where they go Big Grin . My back hurts my knees ache and I was awakened mid sleep with lower leg cramps that had me crawling around the floor to the hot shower.Ouch the leg cramps.
I didnt have too much trouble building this by myself but I wouldnt suggest it. I wouldnt suggest this unit for anyone thats not good at puzzles. No written directions only pictures. I needed this last week during a hail storm. Im going to shop for a small swamp cooler for it. It will get hot fast and I need to cure that before texas hits 110 and Im still killing plants. Directions wanted me to build the base and then build the greenhouse as a separate unit. Pick up the greenhouse and put it on the base Do what? Confused . I didnt have 2 of me so I have to build the house on the base. Ohhhh I see now why. Its wiggly and hard to keep square until you get something bolted together and can handle it by yourself. I got it done. Bungee cords and clamps Rolling on the floor laughing

...my 1st greenhouse and I need bigger and better already Hurray! but this will be a good learning greenhouse cant get too much in there to kill. Im already thinking of some upgrades I can make to it. Had 40 mph wind last night and it makes a lot of noise. The thin polysheets flop around a lot. Wasnt much money and It fit my deck I made. It was a lot of fun sitting in when I was done. I really need to learn how to get a handle on all these orchids I have. my plants seem to like so far

Just a small greenhouse fit for an orchid nooby

Well done! You did a most excellent job! I don't see any roof vents so I can see why Summer heat might be a problem .. You might also want to pick up some shade cloth as well.

Nicely done! Thumbs up
How about simply wetting the shade cloth periodically when the temperature spikes? I see a gentle sprinkler on a timer there. And if that is not enough, how about directing a fan towards that outside dampish shade cloth? I am talking about not soaking the cloth drippy, just keeping it moist. You are not using the water temperature to cool it, but you are looking for evaporative cooling on the outside.
Just a thought....

What you just described what a swamp cooler is Ursula. They are actually easy to make .. lots of how to's on YouTube.

I see! Smiling I was thinking of placing it on the outside, rather than inside.
Have to look up swamp coolers....

Orchids
I tip my hat to you. thanks you muchly .. its a 6 x 8 from Snap and Grow. from greenhouse megastore at 649.00 delivered. 150 less than anywhere else I could find it and took 2 days to get to my door Thumbs up

The shade cloth was ordered custom for something else that didnt quite work out for me ( Thumbs down ) but its 50% aluminet also from greenhouse mega store. 3 weeks delivery on custom cut cloths. 70.00 bucks for the cloth. Of course sudden 60 mph wind and 8 inches of rain mixed with 4 inches of quarter sized hail will take most anything down in the yard as I found out. I lost about 30 orchids in the mess.
Soooo I get to buy new ones now Rolling on the floor laughing

But its feels nice to sit in my greenhouse and look at my plants. Its brings a lot of peace to my tortured soul.

I put lots in it today and moved it around to better suit the light Im getting. The clear poly is very bright even with 50% shade cloth over it. We moving things around.

The swamp cooler I can find is twice what I need but a better unit overall as it can be used for an upgrade. 500 bucks for a 2800 cfm unit thats connected to water supply. Only trouble with a swamp cooler is if it gets too hot and sticky outside it doesnt work very well.

(and it does have a roof vent and the top of the door can stay opened too for some fresh air.movement )

what hail does to an orchid is not nice or appreciated Thumb of 2013-05-06/rkidkelly/032312
