If there is anyone in the Chicago area, I live in Des Plaines, that is interested in violets, I have some I need to dig out, and I hate to compost them. I don't have time to ship, but if anyone wants to take a drive, send me a T-mail. I don't know what the top one is called, but I really like it, the bottom one is V. sororia 'Freckles'.

Hey, Windigo - I'm in Des Plaines, too. Lord, we have violets, don't we??? I have tons of the wild ones. I actually let them encroach into the lawn because they are pretty even when not in flower. I pull them out of the beds, though.

I had never had the white with purple center violets until I moved in to this house, they are so pretty. The Freckles violets I finally got seeds for in a trade, after trying to find them for years, and they are now spreading. I love my violets, they are in my flower beds and in my lawn!! My white and my Freckles far outnumber my purple violets!! I had thought of donating some to the garden club for their sale this weekend, but now that they're about done blooming, they just look like the everyday variety.

Are you going to the plant sale?? Des Plaines, Prospect Hts, and Wheeling Garden Clubs all have their plant sales on this Saturday.

Really? Lord, I have not kept up on these things. I LOVE the Prospect Hts. one - I think that's the one in a parking lot on Rand, right? That's where I got 2 geraniums - not the wild ones, but can't think of their name - that has spread politely and beautifully; and my lilies of the valley - another polite but gorgeous spreader. I'll have to check out where that is. Hope I can go. Soooo much to do. Mom was in the ER for what turned out to be spinal stenosis and a herniated disc - she's home, but I am oh-so-behind on stuff to do now, 'cause I spend half the day at Lutheran General and the other half at work trying to make up the hours. ARRRGGGHH!

I didn't make it to Prospect Hts, did go to the Des Plaines Garden Club sale since it's only a mile from my house. They had a pretty pathetic offering, I guess with the hot summer last year, things didn't spread as much and need the thinning out. Since my Freckles violets were still blooming, I went home and dug up several good sized clumps, along with some Husker's Red Penstemon, geranium praetense, and a few other things and brought them back as a donation to the sale. Now I have room for more!!!

How was the Prospect Hts sale? There is an old friend I used to work with who is a member, I usually only see her once a year when I go to the sale!

Didn't make it - way too much to do in the garden! I live in DP but never joined the club. It just never seemed all that active or dynamic!

I grew up in Des Plaines, and have lived here most of my life, but, I've never joined the garden club either. Their sales are sometimes OK, sometimes rather pathetic, like this year. They said they would love some extras to sell, and I had stuff that had spread that I wanted to get rid of, so I ran home and potted up a dozen or more plants. Most of what I brought was sold before I even left, so it worked out good for both them and me. They seem like a nice group, and were very appreciative of my donation. Their meetings are during the day, and I work, so I couldn't go if I wanted. I figured it was worth going to check out the sale since it was only a 2 or 3 minute drive, just in case there was something really special. I ended up with a $1 plate of homemade cupcakes!!

Homemade cupcakes for a buck? Well, that's worth it! Smiling
