You know, Paul, your post made me wonder if we can browse the photos of a particular plant in the database based on what SORT of photo it is, as in which "Gallery" it's in. If there are lots of photos of blooms, as there are in the Gerbera daisy entry, it makes it a bit more difficult to locate photos of seeds or foliage or other types of photo entries. Might be nice if we could select a particular type of entry to view. VERY large hint here. Whistling

This is what I thought was the idea behind have galleries. If you want to see blooms, click on the blooms tab, if you want habitat, click on that tab etc.

Right. I was looking for that, too, but didn't see tabs or a "sort" option. But then, I have an excuse.....I can't see worth a darn, and my optometrist will back me up! Hilarious!

There are no tabs. I was trying to say that is what I envisioned when we were planning the database. I thought the point of entering photos by galleries was so we would be able to view them separately, by tabs or some other method of selection.

Maybe we just don't have enough entries in the "other" types of galleries to make this a priority for Dave at this point. But it certainly would be nice.

Paul, finding your photos on the Random Plant AND the Recent Plant Images has certainly caused me to look further than I would have otherwise. Especially since you take such great photographs.

Yes, the idea is eventually to have it programmed so that you can view them by gallery, and it'll be fairly simple for me to do it when we decide how we want it.

The only thing stopping me is that I'm not exactly sure how the best presentation for this should be set up. Any ideas?

Well, sort of what Horntoad said. I was thinking of a clickable link on the photo gallery that gave you the option of selecting a particular photo gallery: blooms or seeds or foliage or whatever other categories are out there. Or maybe a pull down menu when you hover over "Photo Gallery?"

Here are a couple of ideas. Both ideas would be where the photo gallery is now. Please excuse the drawing, I am not an artist.

#1 This is how I originally envisioned it. Since blooms are what most people want to see first, it would be the default gallery you would see when you open the page. Then you would have tabs across the top to select the gallery you want.

Thumb of 2013-05-17/Horntoad/c01a4d

#2 You would have one representative photo from each gallery on the main page, with the title. Click on the photo or title to view that gallery. If there is no photo in a particular gallery the system would assign a generic place holder photo. For the generic photos I would use artwork like our badges, so no one thinks it is that actual plant.

Oh, I LIKE that! And I think I like your original idea best. That system would make it very clear that there were more photos than just blooms, but still show that the blooms could be different depending on environment.

Have you ever shopped on line and found a site for say 12 lawn mowers. next to each mower is a check box to compare. Check 3 lawnmowers and compare them side by side.

How about a multi-level system which allows not only comparisons of gallery photos of a plant but also one which allows comparisons of galleries of different plants.

Would it work if you go to the parent plant, say for sempervivum, and in the list for Search by characteristics it would have a list of photo types? That way you would get a list of all that have bloom photos, leaves, entire plant, ect.

Yes, it would be useful to find all of the photos of rose hips, for instance, by looking at a Rosa "Fruit" gallery.
