I am just wondering if anybody else is struggling with their gardens here on the east coast due to all of the rain and cold temps ? I just can't seem to get my beds dug up or anything put in the ground . it is always to wet or to cold . now it has turned miserable muggy hot all at once and within 10 minutes of being outside i am soaking wet with sweat while trying to battle an army of slugs , sow bugs , and centipedes . there has been so little sun that the plants in my greenhouse have seriously struggled to grow and seem like they are at a stand still . not only am i battling bugs and slugs but now i have a powdery type mold in my soil . SERIOUSLY STRESSED AND READY TO GIVE UP .

I moved all my plants out.. they seem to be ok even though they are so soggy.. for days on end..

you are not alone.. wood stove on last week and air condition on now.. just a crazy year.. and late with everything.. it does happen unfortunately

Our green house just came down, we didn't use it much & would do better with just a cold frame.

I had to poke extra holes in my flats this morning.. a couple were just full of water.. another 2 days of this craziness .. hopefully I can get planting soon!!

Out with the drill this morning putting more holes in the 5 gallon bucket planters, dumping out water from flats, picking slugs off all my leafy green veggies, and catching cicadas to feed to the turtles. I so need the rain to stop for a few days so I can get all the plants in the ground. On a good note all the veggies and flowering plants seem to be growing by leaps and bounds. Hoping the cold spell the next couple days doesn't hurt them.

My cukes are starting to flower but no bee's in this cold rain!!

Downright chilly here in Philly! I can see my morning glories shivering Glad I decided to wait on taking out the dahlias, hopefully they will be in the ground by next week. Threatened to put the heat on tonight

Played outside all day weeding, catching cicadas for the turtles and collecting slugs in this cold miserable rainy weather. All in all not a bad day, picked Kale, lettuce, swiss chard, bok choy, cilantro and parsley along with my first radish and about 2 dozen peas. Did a little planting with dry sieved compost in some planters as my marigolds roots where spilling out of the cups they where planted in and had already started to bloom. Inside nice and snug with the fireplace roaring and chilling with my Chihuahua Zeth ready to call it a night. Hoping to see the sun soon so I can mow the lawn which seems to be growing at an alarming rate with all this rain.

I swear i hate to complain about weather after what the midwest has been through the past week . but this is crazy .. it was miserable hot and muggy yesterday so i pulled my plants out of the greenhouse . now i have had to lug them all right back in because it will be down to 35 degrees here in the foothills of NC tonight . the weather is driving me nuts . i can't seem to get anything planted . this is the worse year for crazy weather that we have ever had here . plus it stormed in the middle of the night last night and almost destroyed my young plants that are only a couple inches tall . i have never ever been this late getting stuff planted before . normally i have all of my annuals in the ground by the 2nd or 3rd week of april . it is even more frusterating that i am at a new house trying to start all over and can't get my beds ready because the ground is so swampy .

had to do sooo much fixing this morning.. still have to go help a few iris that got beat up .. my trellises were leaning.. baptisia was all down on the ground.. ugh.. hopefully now we will dry out!!!

Looking good this morning. Removed all the plastic and quickly made greenhouses off the plants this morning. Let the sunshine in on those plants. Poor lettuce is mashed into the ground. Still a bit nippy with the wind but the sunshine feels so good to wash away the gloom. Happy planting everyone summer is coming.

might have to cover everything again tonight I know it looks like a hurricane out there today.. sun is shining but wow the wind is nuts

crazy talk!!!

i gave up on digging up beds for my plants and have a truckload of topsoil and compost mixed together being delivered tomorrow . since i am starting over at a new place i have nothing but hard red clay dirt . was going to plow it up and mix in lots of goodies to build it up . but due to the weather that plan got scratched . keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't storm and soak everything the minute i get the good dirt brought in .

I would love a load of topsoil and compost instead I'm digging clay, turning compost heaps and grabbing as much compost as I can to get all I have to finish planting. The deer are my main problem at the moment. Gotta get the fence up ASAP. Today I dug up the last of the well established Hostas (boring green ones) and dumped them in the woods. Sometime last night the deer came in for a nightly snack. I managed to get up a green plastic mesh fence to protect my perennial garden in the front yard. Not pretty but I want to watch my plants grow and blossom and not get discouraged to find them eaten in the morning.

Thankfully the large landscaping company / garden center i used to work for makes compost in huge amounts . they only landscape for the rich folks and golf courses so they have the good stuff . he doesn't sell it to the public so me being a good past employee is a great thing . he keeps his family's stables clean as a whistle and uses the straw and manure along with the grass trimmings, leaves etc from the lawn care business they have . he mixes it all together after the compost is ready he adds the clean topsoil to it and uses his front end loader to mix it up good . he sold me a truck load of it for 50 bucks . i figure if it is good enough for the well to do folks of the country clubs and golf courses it is good enough for me lol . they guys just got done mowing my yard and have it all prettied up so i am ready to get it all done . my dirt will be here tomorrow morning . then maybe just maybe i will luck up and the weather will hold so i can get it all done .
