Hi. I have a plant that seems to be mislabeled. The sticky label on the pot said Sedum mexicanum....the blooms are white. Conventional wisdom says sedum mexicanum blooms yellow. Any one have an idea who this sedum is?

Moonhowl, it looks like a type of S album - and I'm pretty sure they bloom white. They're are several different cultivars though, so it only narrows it down, doesn't give you an ID... Shrug!

Thanks Greg. I am pretty much resolved to just calling it a Sedum cultivar. At least it seems happy where it is and is blooming and growing. I think I may drop a line to Altman and let them know what it isn't....but doubt that that will make them change anything.

I will be content to call this one Fred. Smiling

Rolling on the floor laughing Fred is a very good name.
And you might be surprised to find that Altman may see the mistake and rectify it. Thumbs up

I agree My experience is that nurseries try to keep things "separate" but things can still get mixed up! They would probably want to know Thumbs up

I had originally posted on the Plant ID forum. It was suggested that the plant may be Villadia batesii http://www.desert-tropicals.co... but the blooms are different

When I checked out Altman's site (the grower) this is the image they have for Sedum mexicanum http://www.cactusshop.com/libr... and states that it is white blooming
I found this image of Sedum Spiral Staircase, another suggested ID http://www.sedumphotos.net/v/s... and also another image that suggested S Spiral Staircase was often mis-id'ed as Villadia batesii

So I found another site with pics of S Spiral Staircase http://www.jardinexotiquerosco... and it is blooming pink

but this link says it blooms white http://galerie.sedum.cz/main.p...

Any wonder I wanna call it Fred? Whistling

Maybe you could give Altman's a link to this thread? There is a lot of information that might be useful to them.
Moonhowl, thank you for all the fun in tracking the information for this amazing sedum. Group hug

Here is a link for you. Sedum 'Spiral Staircase'

Hi Lynn. Thanks for the links....BUT....S Spiral Staircase is thought to be a natural sport/hybrid of Sedum moranense and most pictures of it show pink tinged or pink centered flowers and red tinged stems and stses that it is a very small sedum under 6 inches(mine has a few stems that are just over 7inches)...believe me, I am not trying to be argumentative....I just have no desire to perpetuate the confusion. I think I will refrain from posting my pics to the Plant Database....as much as I would like to. Sad

I will e-mail Altmans and see what happens there. I assume a grower of their size and reputation will surely have some input.

Thanks so much to both Lynn and Greg I tip my hat to you. I will post Altman's response here.

I just spoke with Bob Reidmuller at Altman. He is going to confer with Rene, the succulent manager and will get back to me. He did say that yes, S mexicanum is a yellow bloom, not white, and yes there is a glitch that slipped past them in the on-line catalog. First steps in the puzzle are complete. Thumbs up

Great to hear. I always trust a nursery that works to fix errors. They have a true heart for the plants and their customers.
I give them a big green thumbs up. Thumbs up
